According to the Washington Examiner, President Donald Trump demanded Friday that Fox News fire a reporter who says she confirmed part of The Atlantic‘s recent report alleging the president disparaged fallen American troops during a 2018 trip to France.
The Atlantic’s report, published last Thursday, cites anonymous sources who accuse Trump of calling American soldiers who died in battle during World War I “losers” and “suckers,” among other allegations. The president has sharply refuted the claims, as have others in his circle, but Fox News’ Jennifer Griffin apparently thinks there’s some truth to them.
After Griffin claimed to have confirmed “key parts” of The Atlantic‘s story, Trump ripped the Fox contributor in a Friday tweet, the Examiner reported.
Jennifer Griffin of Fox News Did Not Confirm ‘Most Salacious‘ Part of Atlantic Story https://t.co/rUpbSWhHac via @BreitbartNews All refuted by many witnesses. Jennifer Griffin should be fired for this kind of reporting. Never even called us for comment. @FoxNews is gone!

Another anti-Trump hit piece
Authored by reporter Jeffrey Goldberg, The Atlantic‘s anti-Trump hit piece accuses the president of insulting fallen American troops while on a trip to France in November 2018. Trump was scheduled to attend a ceremony at a cemetery there where American soldiers who died during World War I were buried, but the trip had to be canceled due to rain and, according to Trump, concerns from the Secret Service.
Goldberg, however, says Trump didn’t want to go to the ceremony at all. “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers,” the president reportedly said, according to Goldberg.
Trump’s Friday tweet cited a report earlier that day from Breitbart that noted that while Griffin was able to (allegedly) confirm Goldberg’s claims “that President Trump disparaged veterans and did not want to drive to honor American war dead at Aisne-Marne Cemetery outside Paris,” she couldn’t back up The Atlantic‘s “most salacious” allegations.
According to Breitbart, Griffin was unable to confirm that Trump “called World War I solders buried at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris ‘losers’ and ‘suckers.'”
Trump allies deny
As those in the media scramble to find truth in Goldberg’s report, those close to the president are doing just the opposite.
“[The Atlantic] story is not true,” First Lady Melania Trump tweeted Friday, according to a separate report from the Washington Examiner. “It has become a very dangerous time when anonymous sources are believed above all else, [and] no one knows their motivation. This is not journalism — [i]t is activism. And it is a disservice to the people of our great nation.”
Even former National Security Adviser John Bolton, who was very publicly fired by the president in September 2019, has come forward to refute Goldberg’s claims. “I didn’t hear that,” he told The New York Times. “I’m not saying he didn’t say them later in the day or another time, but I was there for that discussion… It was a straight weather call.”
It remains to be seen who the American people will believe: an anonymously sourced report whose author won’t name names, or some of the biggest names in Washington? Decisions, decisions.
