Following the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Ginsburg last Friday, President Trump made clear that he will move to fill her vacant seat.
However, he confirmed on Monday that he won’t reveal the identity of his nominee until this weekend, citing respect for the late jurist.
“I think it’ll be on Friday or Saturday,” the Washington Examiner quoted Trump as telling the hosts of “Fox and Friends” during an interview yesterday.
Trump: “We want to pay respect”
“And we want to pay respect,” the president explained. “We, it looks like, it looks like we will have, probably, services on Thursday or Friday, as I understand it.”
“I think, in all due respect, we should wait until the services are over for Justice Ginsburg. And so we’re looking probably at Friday or maybe Saturday.”
The paper also reported that White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany expressed confidence that the Senate will agree to hold a vote on whomever the president puts forward.
“We do think that we will end up having the votes,” she told “CBS This Morning.” McEnany added, “We encourage Republican senators to take a look at this nominee we’re putting forward.”
She insisted that the nominee “will be a very talented woman,” stressing, “The president did confirm that it will be a woman, so we do think that it will be, of course, a tight turnaround.”
AOC: Impeachment “on the table”
Trump’s decision to hold off on announcing the name of his nominee is unlikely to win him any favor from Democrats, as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has already threatened that “nothing is off the table” if he chooses to proceed.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has already indicated that the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives may respond to a Supreme Court nomination with impeachment.
“I believe that certainly there has been an enormous amount of lawbreaking in the Trump administration. I believe that Attorney General Barr is unfit for office and that he has pursued potentially lawbreaking behavior,” she told reporters on Sunday.
“That being said, these are procedures and decisions that are largely up to House Democratic leadership,” the New York congresswoman added. “But I believe that also we must consider, again, all of the tools available to our disposal and that all of these options should be entertained and on the table.”
