Melania Trump breaks silence on The Atlantic’s report: ‘This is not journalism – it is activism’

First Lady Melania Trump has broken her silence on The Atlantic‘s Thursday hit-piece against her husband.

In a tweet Friday, the first lady said The Atlantic‘s claims that the president disparaged fallen American troops are “not true” and blasted reporter Jeffrey Goldberg’s use of anonymous sources, the Washington Examiner reported.

Melania Trump argued that Goldberg’s piece isn’t journalism. “It is activism,” she wrote, adding that the American people deserve better.

The Atlantic’s allegations

Goldberg’s piece for The Atlantic, published Thursday, alleged that President Trump disparaged American soldiers who died in battle during World War I as “losers” and “suckers.”

Goldberg alleges that the remarks were uttered ahead of a planned visit by the president to a cemetery in France where American soldiers from the first World War are buried. The trip was canceled due to rain and concerns from the Secret Service, according to the president, but Goldberg maintains that the commander-in-chief had ulterior motives.

“Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers,” President Trump told aides at the time, Goldberg alleges.

But Melania Trump isn’t the only one denying Goldberg’s account. The likes of former White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders, former acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, and even former National Security Adviser John Bolton — who was fired by the president a year ago this month — have all come forward to refute The Atlantic‘s claims.

“It’s a hoax”

President Trump himself has also spoken out about The Atlantic‘s story, which he said marks the start of what will be a “massive disinformation campaign” by the so-called “Fake News Media.”

At a press conference Friday, the president similarly dismissed The Atlantic‘s story as nothing more than another “hoax” from the mainstream media. “There is nobody that feels more strongly about our soldiers, our wounded warriors, our soldiers that died in war, than I do,” the president said, according to a White House transcript.

“It’s a hoax, just like the fake dossier was a hoax, just like the ‘Russia, Russia, Russia,’ was a hoax. It was a total hoax. No collusion. Just like so many other things. It’s a hoax,” he added. “And you’ll hear more of these things, totally unrelated, as we get closer and closer to [the] election.”
