Last week, President Donald Trump attracted mixed reviews for his executive order banning the use of critical race theory, which he described as a “sickness,” in training materials used for federal employees.
Fox News Channel host Tucker Carlson responded to proponents of the controversial theory during a segment of his show this week, specifically challenging white Americans to step down from positions of prominence and power.
“You’ve got to wonder why”
“White privilege is very real, they’re telling you,” Carlson told his audience on Tuesday. “It is time for a ‘reckoning on race relations.'”
Attempting to expose the perceived hypocrisy of that position, he went on to note the prevalence of white progressives among the nation’s elite.
“You hear that all the time,” he said of the arguments supported by critical race theory adherents. “But at some point, you’ve got to wonder why any of these people, the most privileged people in America, still have their jobs.”
In order to stay true to their beliefs, Carlson suggested that they should have “resigned and given their highly paid gigs to oppressed people.”
He went on to target CNN President Jeff Zucker, whose network has frequently provided airtime to those calling for such a racial reckoning.
“The crime of criticizing critical theory”
“Zucker is the head of CNN, he’s a graduate of Harvard University,” Carlson said. “He’s been in television his entire adult life. Jeff Zucker is the embodiment of privilege if there ever was one. According to critical race theory, the theory that he espouses and defends, Jeff Zucker got his job precisely because of systemic racism. So why does he still have it? How can he bear to hold that job?”
Instead of taking a personal stand and stepping down, Carlson accused Zucker of ordering “his minions to attack this show for the crime of criticizing critical theory.”
Tucker Carlson Tonight was among the cable news shows that publicly questioned the agenda put forth in training material designed under the critical race theory model ahead of the Trump administration’s recent decision.
“All agencies are directed to begin to identify all contracts or other agency spending related to any training on ‘critical race theory,’ ‘white privilege,’ or any other training or propaganda effort that teaches or suggests either (1) that the United States is an inherently racist or evil country or (2) that any race or ethnicity is inherently racist or evil,” wrote U.S. Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought in a memo last week.
While Zucker and others appear to be satisfied benefiting from a system they believe is rigged in their favor, the Trump administration seems more interested in leveling the playing field for all Americans.
