While it has become increasingly common to see arguments and even physical altercations erupt over political disagreements, one recent incident in Delaware was denounced as particularly alarming.
A viral video emerged last month that appeared to show two women attack a 7-year-old boy and stealing his Trump campaign hat. This week, both individuals were indicted on criminal counts including multiple felonies, as reported by the New York Post.
“Betrays the principles”
Olivia Winslow and Camryn Amy are reportedly facing charges of robbery, conspiracy, and child endangerment as part of an act being prosecuted as a hate crime. In addition to touching the child, the women are accused of assaulting adults who attempted to intervene.
Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings issued a statement in which she noted that “harming another person — let alone a child — because of the expression of their views betrays the principles on which our country was founded.”
A spokesperson for the attorney general’s office confirmed that the defendants are both 21 years old and have since been released after posting bail.
If convicted of the charges against them, each could face up to 15 years in prison.
State law defines a hate crime as one committed “for the purpose of interfering with the victim’s free exercise or enjoyment of any right, privilege or immunity protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, or commits said crime because the victim has exercised or enjoyed said rights.”
“Truly shameful”
Prosecutors believe such a designation is warranted in this case, which includes video evidence recorded by the young Trump supporter’s mother.
As Breitbart reported, the boy can be heard shouting to the women that they took “somebody else’s hat,” to which his mother advised him to get it back.
“Outside the DNC Convention tonight, radical leftists attacked a 7 year old boy,” read the caption to a Students for Trump tweet featuring a clip of the incident. “Why? Because he was simply showing his support for President [Donald Trump]. Truly shameful.”
The White House reacted to the story by sending a collection of gifts — including a new hat — to the boy, as reported by the Washington Examiner.
Videos like this one might be difficult for many Americans to watch. Their existence, however, exposes the public to how prevalent such behavior has become while helping authorities and prosecutors tasked with pursuing justice.
