Biden claims coronavirus has taken 200 million American lives in latest gaffe

While the campaign of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden claims he is not in mental decline, video from a speech Sunday shows him breaking down into complete nonsense. The former vice president made his latest colossal gaffe while criticizing President Donald Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

At a campaign stop in Philadelphia, Biden claimed that 200 million Americans — which would mean roughly two out of every three people living in the United States — have died from the coronavirus thanks to Trump’s alleged mismanagement, Fox News reported.

Not the first colossal gaffe

The baffling statement is off by a few zeroes from the roughly 200,000 Americans who have died from the pandemic so far. On a global scale, fewer than 1 million people have died from the virus, according to MarketWatch.

Biden has made similar blunders in the past, claiming in February that 150 million people have been killed from gun violence since 2007, as Fox reported at the time.

Since securing the presidential nomination, Biden is still making nonsensical statements like these with only weeks before Election Day. “If Donald Trump has his way, the complications from COVID-19, which are well beyond what they should be — it’s estimated that 200 million people have died — probably by the time I finish this talk,” Biden said Sunday, according to Fox. Take a look:

Biden did state the correct figure later in the speech, as the New York Post noted. “Like I said, as I speak we’re probably passing 200,000 deaths lost to this virus,” Biden clarified.

Biden’s blunders spell bad news

The former vice president has made the toll of the coronavirus one of his primary attacks against the incumbent president throughout the campaign season. But Biden’s recurring fumbles certainly seem to call into question his ability to do a better job of handling the pandemic. Indeed, it appears Biden is still struggling to even get the basic facts straight.

In June, Biden similarly claimed that 120 million Americans had died from the coronavirus, as Fox noted. “People don’t have a job, people don’t know where to go, they don’t know what to do,” he said. “Now we have over 120 million dead from COVID.”

For his part, Trump has assailed his rival as a mentally fading “puppet” and a sellout to China whose candidacy has received nothing but friendly coverage from the media.

Trump has also attacked Biden’s condemnation of the president’s “xenophobic” travel ban from China, arguing that a Biden presidency would place political correctness before American lives.

“If we had listened to Joe Biden, hundreds of thousands more Americans would have died,” the president said at a recent campaign rally in North Carolina. “You know that. He was way behind.”
