Poll shows majority in favor of Trump’s executive order temporarily cutting payroll taxes

As Congress remained deadlocked on the specifics of the next coronavirus relief package, President Donald Trump moved earlier this month to enact a series of executive actions to provide limited aid to the American people.

Among his orders was a temporary suspension of federal payroll tax deductions, and a new poll shows a majority of Americans support the move, as reported by Just the News.

“For all workers and businesses”

Democrats and even a few Republicans have expressed a general opposition to Trump’s orders, but the president and his supporters have defended them as the necessary response to an ongoing legislative impasse.

Independent pollster Scott Rasmussen’s RMG Research conducted a survey earlier this month in an effort to gauge the public’s response to a number of issues — including a payroll tax holiday.

After polling 1,200 registered voters between Aug. 13-15, the firm found that 52% either strongly or somewhat favor “cutting the payroll taxes for all workers and businesses.”

The poll, which has a 2.8% margin of error, found that 35% of respondents were either somewhat or strongly opposed to the proposition. Another 13% were unsure.

Among the supportive majority, an even 26% fell into the respective “somewhat” and “strongly” favorable categories. Those who responded negatively broke down into 12% who were somewhat opposed and 23% who were strongly opposed to the tax cut.

Partisan discrepancies

As Election Day approaches, one potentially positive for the Trump re-election campaign lies in the demographic breakdown of the poll’s results.

Even among those who told pollsters that they “somewhat disapprove” of Trump’s overall job performance, a combined 48% expressed support for the tax break.

A separate poll conducted earlier this year by Fortune/Survey Monkey suggests the idea is even more popular among voters when Trump’s name is not associated. That survey of 1,672 adults in March found that a combined 79% were in support of a payroll tax cut in response to a general query regarding the “federal government” instituting the change.

That overwhelming majority included 48% who “strongly” supported the idea and 31% who “somewhat” supported it.

It makes sense that hardworking Americans would want to keep more of the money they earn. While some voters will rail against anything Trump supports, it is clear that voters across the political spectrum are likely to get on board with this proposal.
