Gun control advocates are finding it more and more difficult to make their case.
According to a new poll from Rasmussen Reports, voter support for gun control has dropped significantly over the past year.
The numbers
Rasmussen Reports conducted the poll earlier this month, on August 5th. Pollsters surveyed 1,000 likely voters and, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points, found that 52 percent support stricter gun control measures.
You may say, “but, that is bad news. The majority is in favor of gun control.”
Yes, that does seem to be true. But, here is why the poll is actually good news: just last year, the same poll found that 64 percent of likely voters supported stricter gun control measures, and, in previous years, that number was around 56 percent.
The decline in support from 64 percent to 52 percent is no small dropoff, and it took place in the span of only a year.
More proof of a change
Breitbart has reported that each of the first six months of 2020 has set a new record for firearm background checks in that month. In other words, January set a new record for January, February for February, March for March, and so on through June.
In addition, Breitbart reports that June set the all-time record for the most firearm background checks in a month ever. For its report, Breitbart cited numbers from the FBI, which showed that 3,931,607 NICS checks were conducted in June. The previous single-month record, set in March 2020, was 3,740,688 checks.
To go along with this, the Rasmussen Reports poll found that 47 percent of likely voters “say they or someone in their household now owns a gun.” And, among likely voters in gun-owning households, 25 percent “say they or someone in their family has purchased one within the last six months.”
The trend, thus, seems to be toward gun ownership.
It’s not that surprising . . .
. . . that support for gun control has fallen and that people are arming themselves. Following the death of George Floyd, we have seen a rise in violence and a fall in policing, as many areas of the country are looking to take steps towards the mob’s demand to defund the police. So, how else are people supposed to protect themselves, their families, and their property?
Oftentimes, good things come from bad situations, and perhaps the good that will come out of the violence we have seen is a renewed understanding of the importance of our Second Amendment.
