Washington Examiner columnist Becket Adams slammed the media in a piece published Tuesday for cheering an Arizona woman who he said “leveraged her father’s death into a full-throated sales pitch for presumptive Democratic [presidential] nominee Joe Biden.”
According to Adams, Kristin Urquiza had already gained a measure of fame when she authored an obituary for her father that chastised President Donald Trump and his response to the coronavirus pandemic. That apparently prompted Dems to commission Urquiza to speak at their virtual national convention this week, where she again used her father’s death from COVID-19 to spew leftist talking points.
“He had faith”
According to Adams, Urquiza spoke on Monday, the first day of Dems’ four-day-long convention. In her remarks, the Arizona woman blamed Trump for the death of her father, who she said voted for Trump and “had faith” in him.
“He had faith in Donald Trump,” she said, according to a transcript of her prepared remarks cited by Adams. “He voted for him, listened to him, believed him and his mouthpieces when they said that [the] coronavirus was under control and going to disappear; that it was OK to end social distancing rules before it was safe; and that if you had no underlying health conditions, you’d probably be fine.”
Urquiza said her father had gone to a bar shortly after Arizona lifted its stay-at-home order, then soon fell ill. He was put on a ventilator and died in ICU “with a nurse holding his hand,” according to his daughter.
“My dad was a healthy 65-year-old,” Urquiza recounted Monday, according to a transcript from The New York Times. “His only pre-existing condition was trusting Donald Trump, and for that, he paid with his life.”
Before promising to vote for Biden in honor of her father, Urquiza claimed the pandemic has revealed “two Americas: the America that Donald Trump lives in and the America that my father died in,” the Times reported.
“All at the expense of her late father”
As Adams wrote in his Tuesday column, the media quickly pounced on Urquiza’s soundbite-filled account.
“For national media, the obscene spectacle of a woman propping up her dead father for political purposes was the highpoint of the evening, as journalists and commentators alike were left mesmerized, excited, and deeply, deeply impressed by the woman’s speech,” the columnist alleged.
But while those on the left may have seen it that way, Adams wasn’t convinced.
“Urquiza’s speech was grotesque. It was unseemly,” he wrote Tuesday. “It was patently self-serving and political, and all at the expense of her late father. The speech was also a huge hit with the Democratic base and members of the political press, particularly Urquiza’s line about ‘pre-existing conditions.'”
Indeed, while using a family member’s death as a partisan tool might have once been thought of as uncouth, it seems there’s no level the left won’t stoop to in their quest to push Trump out. Will civility ever return to American politics?
