On second thought, Corey Lewandowski will not be mounting a Senate campaign in 2020.
The former Trump campaign manager put an end to speculation that he was planning to run in New Hampshire, according to multiple media reports. The Trump associate said that he was dropping his bid to focus on family, despite being “certain” that he would win, and said he would support whomever the Republicans nominate.
“After much consideration I have decided to forgo a campaign for the US Senate. While taking on a career politician from the Washington swamp is a tall order, I am certain I would have won. My priorities remain my family and ensuring that @realDonaldTrump is re-elected POTUS,” he tweeted.
Lewandowski drops rumored Senate bid
Lewandowski worked as Trump’s campaign manager until June of 2016, and he did not go on to serve in the Trump administration.
He has remained a close and vocal booster of the president, whom he has defended frequently on television, The Hill notes, and in September he garnered significant media attention for his combative testimony about Robert Mueller’s investigation before the House Judiciary Committee.
The Trump booster said he was “seriously considering” a Senate run against New Hampshire Democratic incumbent Jeannie Shaheen in August, but in a series of tweets Tuesday he said that his plans had changed.
Lewandowski expressed gratitude for an “outpouring of support” and pledged to back a Republican candidate who will help Trump fight illegal immigration and the Washington, D.C. swamp.
I am truly humbled by the outpouring of support I have received from people across New Hampshire and the country. NH needs a US Senator who will put our citizens first and not illegal aliens; one who will support pro-growth policies to keep the Trump economy strong. One who will support strict constitutionalist judges; and one who will fight for our values, not those of Washington, DC. Accordingly, I will be making an endorsement in the Republican Primary for US Senate in the near future to ensure we defeat Jeanne Shaheen in 2020.
A recent Emerson University poll found that Lewandowski would lead Republican contenders by double digits, The Hill noted. Trump has spoken fondly of Lewandowski but never endorsed a potential Senate run.
New Hampshire Dems respond
Both Shaheen and Hillary Clinton won the swing state of New Hampshire narrowly, in 2014 and 2016 respectively. Sheehan is seeking a third Senate term in 2020.
Liberals have attacked Lewandoswki, who has a home in New Hampshire, as a Washington crony and a sycophant of the president. In a statement, the Democratic party of New Hampshire lumped Lewandowski together with other Republican challengers because of their close relationship to Trump.
“Every Republican running for Senate in New Hampshire has stood proudly with Corey Lewandowski and Donald Trump in their efforts to take away health care from tens of thousands of Granite Staters and reverse Roe vs. Wade,” said Josh Marcus-Blank, spokesman for the New Hampshire Democratic party, adding that Shaheen will keep working “to lower prescription drug costs and making sure veterans and their families get the benefits they deserve.”
It looks like Mr. Lewandowski is thinking things over — but he’ll clearly continue supporting Donald Trump’s America First agenda.
