Nadler: House too busy with Trump impeachment investigation to go after Kavanaugh

House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) was asked Monday whether his committee would move to investigate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh after a new allegation was reported by The New York Times Saturday. Nadler said that he wouldn’t. The reason?

He’s too busy trying to impeach President Donald Trump to bother with going after Kavanaugh.

“We have our hands full”

The exchange occurred during a radio interview with WNYC. When Kavanaugh was mentioned, Nadler shifted the focus to President Trump.

“We have our hands full with impeaching the president right now, and that’s going to take up our limited resources and time for a while,” the congressman explained.

“Frankly, we are concentrating our resources on determining whether to impeach the president,” he said later. “Personally I think the President ought to be impeached but we have to concentrate on that for the next few months.”

Kavanaugh allegation

A new sexual misconduct allegation against Kavanaugh surfaced on Saturday when The Times published a claim from Kavanaugh classmate Max Stier.

According to the report, Stier claimed to have seen Kavanaugh pants-down at a college party “where friends pushed his penis into the hand of a female student.” However, The Times later updated its story, adding an editor’s note which read:

An earlier version of this article, which was adapted from a forthcoming book, did not include one element of the book’s account regarding an assertion by a Yale classmate that friends of Brett Kavanaugh pushed his penis into the hand of a female student at a drunken dorm party. The book reports that the female student declined to be interviewed and friends say that she does not recall the incident. That information has been added to the article.

Kavanaugh battle reignites

Still, Democratic presidential hopefuls are calling for Kavanaugh’s impeachment.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) tweeted, “Last year the Kavanaugh nomination was rammed through the Senate without a thorough examination of the allegations against him. Confirmation is not exoneration, and these newest revelations are disturbing. Like the man who appointed him, Kavanaugh should be impeached.”

Warren wasn’t alone in her demands, with Beto O’Rourke alleging that Kavanaugh “lied under oath” and needed to be removed. However, Republicans came to the justice’s defense.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell took to the Senate floor to voice his support for Kavanaugh, while Trump took to Twitter.

“Brett Kavanaugh should start suing people for libel, or the Justice Department should come to his rescue,” Trump thundered. “The lies being told about him are unbelievable. False Accusations without recrimination. When does it stop? They are trying to influence his opinions. Can’t let that happen!”
