9 killed, 18 injured in Chicago shootings over the weekend

Sean Hannity underscored the “total silence” from the left after another deadly weekend of gun violence in Chicago.

Nine people were killed and 18 were injured in shootings across the Second City, but Chicago’s mayor is blaming Republicans for the city’s gun violence problem, Hannity’s website reported. Meanwhile, Democrats nationwide are openly admitting to an agenda of confiscation, with Beto O’Rourke leading the charge.

9 killed, 18 wounded in Chicago

Chicago’s seemingly intractable gun violence problem has received plenty of attention in conservative media, but Democrats have consistently sidelined the trend. The city’s progressive mayor Lori Lightfoot expressed the mood on the left when she blamed “cowardly Republicans” in neighboring states for violence in her own city in response to criticism from Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX).

“Sixty percent of firearms owned or used illegally recovered in Chicago come from outside Illinois. These guns don’t recognize state lines or city boundaries. Cruz said the five U.S. cities with the highest murder rates ‘have had Democratic mayors for decades and aggressive gun control policies — none seems to be working.’ He’s making my case for me: As long as people can drive from Illinois to Indiana and purchase a personal arsenal without a background check, Chicago’s gun laws will always be as weak as those of the closest permissive state,” she wrote in the Washington Post last week.

But while Chicago’s mayor deflects blame for problems in her city, the carnage continues. More than 30 people were shot across Chicago this weekend, mostly on the West and South sides, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Between 5 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Monday, nine people were murdered in the neighborhoods of Cragin (Northwest side), Bronzeville (South side), Englewood (South side), Austin (West side), Gresham (South side), Lawndale (West side), Morgan Park (Far south), Garfield Park (West side), and Dunning (Northwest side).

At least 15 others were injured, including a 15-year-old boy. The news reports tell a familiar story:  gun violence in the city has not abated, despite the mayor’s promises to reverse the dismal trend. All summer long, Chicago has reeled from consecutive weekends of carnage.

The weekend before last, six people were killed and 28 others were wounded. Chicago has its worst weekend of violence all year in early August, when 55 people were shot, 7 fatally, in one weekend. But the Chicago gun violence barely registered in the aftermath of the shootings in El Paso and Dayton, which Democrats found more favorable to their political narrative.

Democrats exploit outliers to push gun control

Republicans often point to cities like Chicago, which has been run by Democrats for decades, to demonstrate the failure of gun control to stem violence. But for yet another weekend, Democrats continue to ignore the example of Chicago, where violence unfolds with a disturbingly banal regularity.

While pretending that epidemic gun violence in gun-controlled cities like Chicago doesn’t exist, Democrats and the media have taken to amplifying the outliers — the highly televised, terrifying mass shootings that politicians talk about — to frighten Americans into submitting to a gun control agenda. Chicago’s death toll this weekend included a man who was shot dead in a triple shooting in Bronzeville. A triple shooting is technically a mass shooting, which is defined as one in which 3 or more people are shot, but Democrats focus on certain cases that attract the most media attention.

Beto O’Rourke said it all when he admitted in the open last week, “Hell, yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47. We’re not going to allow it to be used against our fellow Americans anymore.” So there you have it: Democrats have always wanted to confiscate guns (“buyback” is a bogus term), they’re only finding the courage now to admit it. Meanwhile, the Democrats’ fearmongering seems to be working: some 40 percent of respondents to a YouGov survey said that the NRA is a terrorist organization.

Democrats aren’t interested in the fact that AR-15 is used in a negligible minority of homicides, or that some 50 percent of murders are concentrated in 2 percent of counties. Lightfoot entered office vowing to reverse the dismal trend, but with her 100 days now up, she’s turned to deflecting blame on Republicans and permissive gun laws in Indiana. But none of those excuses change the reality: trying to take away Constitutional freedoms is not a solution.

If Democrats seriously wanted to address gun violence, wouldn’t they talk more about cities like Chicago, where it’s an epidemic problem, instead of raising panic over the statistical outliers?  That’s what they would do if they were operating in good faith. But they’re not. Democrats like Beto are tyrants, minus the power. They’re not looking for solutions; they’re looking for panic to justify taking more power for themselves.
