Trump criticizes Ilhan Omar: ‘If one-half of the things they’re saying about her are true she shouldn’t even be in office’

President Donald Trump criticized Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) in remarks to reporters at the White House on Friday, apparently referring to recently renewed media scrutiny of her marriage history.

“I’m looking at this Omar from Minnesota. And if one-half of the things they’re saying about her are true she shouldn’t even be in office,” Trump said while discussing a small, far-left group of Democrat House members that includes Omar and is fronted by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

Watch below:

Complicated marriages

Omar has been accused of filing taxes jointly with Ahmed Hirsi, the father of her three children, while still legally married to another man, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, in 2014 and 2015. She married Elmi in 2009 but said they separated in 2011, the Washington Examiner reported.

She claims that she and Hirsi were married in their Muslim faith tradition, but not legally. Hirsi was represented as Omar’s husband in 2016 when she was running for state office in Minnesota although legally, she was married to Elmi until they finally divorced in 2017.

Rumors of immigration fraud

Rumors have been flying since Omar took state office in 2017 that she married Elmi fraudulently to help him get a green card. Furthermore, it was rumored that Elmi was actually Omar’s brother.

Records do show that Elmi was a British citizen before marrying Omar. Elmi attended South Dakota University until he graduated in 2012. He lived in Minnesota briefly but then moved back to Great Britain.

Snopes called the claim “unproven,” noting there is nothing in any official documents stating that Omar had a younger brother. And if Elmi was her brother, they point out, that would be enough for him to get a green card without marrying her.

The website did question why she would present herself as married to one man when she was legally married to another, however. Something is not right in the situation, whether or not Elmi is Omar’s brother.

Covering up the facts

Furthermore, the Examiner reported that Omar’s campaign shut down two different stories in 2016 about her marital situation. Both the Star Tribune and independent journalist Blois Olsen were asked or threatened by Omar’s attorneys into shutting down stories about why Omar was presenting Hirsi as her husband when she was still legally married to Elmi.

Although Omar gave out an explanation for her complicated marital situation, she could clearly see that the voting public in Minnesota would be put off by it.

Trump’s offhand comment was meant to be a dig at Omar’s credibility. The outspoken freshman Democrat has aggressively attacked Trump’s policies, insinuating or outright saying that he is racist for wanting to stop illegal immigration.

Regardless of the real truth of her personal history, Omar’s disrespect for American laws should have disqualified her for national office in the first place. The fact that she and other radical Democrats who think the U.S. should have no borders have managed to make it into office at all is disturbing and frightening.
