Far-left Democrat and “Squad” member Ilhan Omar has a history of controversy, something that was on display again this week when she demanded a public apology from Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert.
Boebert has since made clear that in addition to not apologizing, she believes that Omar is the one who should be saying sorry.
According to Fox News, the dispute began after Boebert spoke to supporters about an alleged incident during which she encountered Omar in a Capitol Hill elevator.
Boebert criticized for comments tying Omar to terrorism
“I look to my left and there she is: Ilhan Omar,” Boebert recalled, adding. “And I said, ‘Well, she doesn’t have a backpack. We should be fine.’”
“I looked over and I said, ‘Oh look, the jihad squad decided to show up for work today.’ Don’t worry, it’s just her staffers on Twitter that talk for her. She’s not tough in person.”
In 2016, Omar made headlines after asking a judge to show leniency when he sentenced a group of Minnesota men who had been convicted of attempting to join the terror group ISIS.
Boebert calls on Omar to apologize for anti-American, anti-Semitic, anti-police rhetoric
Boebert’s remarks resulted in allegations of bigotry, which lead her to issue a statement on Friday in which she apologized “to anyone in the Muslim community” who may have been offended by her words.
She then called Omar, an interaction that both parties say did not go well. In a video posted to her Instagram account, Boebert accused Omar of demanding a public personal apology because what GOP member “had done wasn’t good enough.”
“She kept asking for a public apology so I told Ilhan Omar that she should make a public apology to the American people for her anti-American, anti-Semitic, anti-police rhetoric,” Boebert went on.
“She continued to press and I continued to press back,” Boebert added, saying that the conversation came to an end when “Rep. Omar hung up on me.”
For her part, Omar released a statement saying she had “graciously accepted a call from Rep. Lauren Boebert in the hope of receiving a direct apology for falsely claiming she met me in an elevator, suggesting I was a terrorist, and for a history of anti-Muslim hate.”
“Instead of apologizing for her Islamophobic comments and fabricated lies, Rep. Boebert refused to publicly acknowledge her hurtful and dangerous comments. She instead doubled down on her rhetoric and I decided to end the unproductive call.”
