A ‘revolution’ will happen if Roe v. Wade is overturned, Dem Senator claims

This week, the U.S. Supreme Court will face the first huge test of its political makeup as it will hear opening arguments in the controversial abortion case that stems from an anti-abortion law passed earlier this year in Mississippi.

According to the Washington Examiner, one of the outcomes technically possible involves the overturning of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, which provided women the right to abortion access across the country. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a proponent for widespread abortion access, warned that a “revolution” could happen in America should Roe ultimately be overturned.

The pro-abortion senator claims that such a “revolution” would be waged by young Americans who would find it “not acceptable” if the high court dismantles Roe.

“Go ahead” and outlaw it

Shaheen held nothing back as she issued what felt like, to many, a threat aimed at the high court of an American revolution in the streets should the 1973 ruling be shot down as a result of the upcoming Mississippi abortion case.

“I hope the Supreme Court is listening to the people of the United States because … I think if you want to see a revolution, go ahead, outlaw Roe v. Wade and see what the response is of the public, particularly young people,” she said Monday during a virtual event in her home state.

The senator added: “Because I think that will not be acceptable to young women or young men.”

Pre-Roe memories

Shaheen was asked if she believes the debate over Roe is currently “muted,” given that a majority of pro-abortion activists these days have only lived in a post-Roe America. The New Hampshire senator fired back, insisting that her passion for the topic stems from what life was like for women before the ruling.

“I’ve lived the consequences of the pre-Roe era,” Shaheen said.

She added: “I had friends in college who were forced to seek dangerous back-alley abortions because women across the country were denied access to critical family planning services.”

Court observers have offered a number of different possible outcomes of the upcoming Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization hearing, but admit that it’s too difficult to predict, even with a conservative majority high court bench, given that some justices have hinted that they believe Roe to be settled law.

Only time will tell what new precedents or landmarks are set, but it’s beyond the pale that a Democratic senator is already calling for “revolution” if she doesn’t get the desired outcome. If a Republican had threatened the Supreme Court in the same way, they’d likely be impeached or ousted from office.
