The White House is so desperate to sell President Joe Biden’s nearly $2 trillion Build Back Better Act that it is now trying to discredit a devastating report from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the Washington Examiner reports.
The White House’s new tactic was deployed after the Democrat-led House passed Biden’s Build Back Better Act along party lines in a 218–210 vote.
CBO contradiction
Before the House passed the bill, the CBO released its score for the legislation and how it will impact the national deficit. Biden, on several occasions, has referred to CBO scoring as the “gold standard,” as “widely respected,” as “bipartisan,” and as “respectable.”
What the CBO found was that the Build Back Better Act would increase the U.S. deficit by $367 billion over a ten-year period, from 2022 through 2031.
That directly conflicts the lies sold by the Biden administration, which claimed that the number will be offset by an increase in tax collections by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The CBO, however, disagreed.
The CBO found that the IRS collections would only bring in about $127 billion, which would be far short of the $367 billion addition to the deficit.
Spin tactics deployed
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki tried her best on Friday to discredit the CBO’s report, despite the fact that Biden has heaped praise on the CBO in the past.
“Our assessment and the assessment by many economists out there is that there will be savings over 10 years,” Psaki claimed. “It will actually reduce the deficit. This is an area where experts, economic experts … have confirmed that there are significant savings that will come from this.”
Psaki went on to claim that the CBO simply failed, in its report, to account for other revenue sources.
“What I’m conveying to you is that our calculations and assessments and those of outside economists are that [this bill will] actually reduce the deficit and it will also lower costs and reduce inflationary pressures,” Psaki claimed.
Called out
Psaki was called out on her’s and Biden’s hypocrisy, as a reporter noted that Psaki once condemned a member of the Trump administration for disputing a CBO score. According to Psaki, though, this time is different: she claimed that she wasn’t dismissing the CBO’s score and that the problem, she claimed, is that there has not been “a great deal of history or experience in scoring IRS enforcement.”
The simple fact is that the Build Back Better Act is going to cost Americans, dearly, and if it gets all the way through Congress and signed by the president, the social spending bill will radically transform America as we know it.
