According to Fox News, defense attorney Mark Richards came out swinging at the media’s sloppy, slanderous coverage of his client, Kyle Rittenhouse, after the teen was fully acquitted in his murder trial Friday.
The verdict sent a shockwave through the press, which got “basic facts” wrong in their reckless and hostile reporting, Richards told journalist Ashleigh Banfield.
“Trial proved” they’re wrong
While rudimentary details of the media’s story were false, it wasn’t until the trial that many Americans realized they had been deceived, Richards noted.
“Much of the coverage at the beginning was wrong,” he said. “The trial proved that.”
One particular fixation of the media was the notion that Rittenhouse had “crossed state lines” with an illegal firearm. In fact, the gun was legal and was being kept at a friend’s house in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Even as the media narrative unraveled in court, news anchors continued to repeat flagrant lies about Rittenhouse, Richards noted. MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough claimed that Rittenhouse’s mother drove him to Kenosha and that he fired sixty rounds, when in fact he drove himself, and fired eight rounds.
Richards said that he was “angry” to see that MSNBC and CNN disregarded “generic, basic facts” so they could push a narrative. “And it makes me angry that they can’t take the time to at least get the generic, basic facts correct because it didn’t fit in the story they wanted to tell,” he said.
Totally shameless
While Rittenhouse traveled about 20 minutes from Antioch, Illinois, a suburb bordering Wisconsin, many in the media portrayed his journey as much longer. One guest on Joy Reid’s MSNBC show said that Rittenhouse traveled four hours, Richards noted.
“That’s wrong,” Richards said. “When I hear some guest host on Joy Reid say my client drove four hours to go to a riot with his AR, that’s wrong. It’s false.”
Many have wondered if Rittenhouse will sue the media and Joe Biden for defaming him as a “white supremacist,” as Fox previously reported. Biden had the audacity to say he was “angry” about the verdict, and despite Rittenhouse’s acquittal, many on the left are still spreading easily disproven falsehoods about the case.
In a report Sunday, CBS incorrectly stated Rittenhouse was “armed for battle” when he “crossed state lines.” A top Democrat, among others, even claimed that Jacob Blake, a Black man who was paralyzed in a police shooting in Kenosha, is dead. Blake is, in fact, alive.
An interview with Rittenhouse and Tucker Carlson will air Monday evening.
