President Joe Biden’s controversial Build Back Better plan includes a whopping $80 billion in funding to hire almost 90,000 Internal Revenue Service agents who’ll be tasked with keeping a close eye on American people’s bank accounts.
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) pointed out the agents’ jobs will be something like the “spying” that happens in socialist countries where income and money usage is very closely monitored, according to Fox News.
“It’s wrong. Eighty billion for 89,000 more agents to spy on our bank accounts. This isn’t America,” Mace, representing the Lowcountry Region, said.
“This kind of thing has been tried in socialist countries elsewhere. It does not work. And the fact that we’re going to continue to do this rather than reform our tax policy to make it more friendly and easier to use – either a flat tax or a consumption tax – we’re going to hire all these agents to spy on our bank accounts. It’s un-American.”
Republicans put up a strong fight against Build Back Better and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) who delivered a speech of over eight hours from the House floor in resistance to the House’s vote on the Biden administration’s plan.
However, according to Mace, Republicans will have to find a way to push back the damaging legislation.
“Republicans have a lot to run on next year, but the problem is going to be, ‘How do we reverse this bad policy if it goes through and gets passed?’” she added.
This is the bill that prompted headlines when the administration asserted that the whopping bill would not cost the American people anything.
However, Republicans pushed back, saying that the added IRS agents, who are expected to do an additional 1.2 million audits above previous years’ averages appear to largely impact the middle class.
According to Fox News, half of the additional audits would impact those earning less than $75,000 a year and one-quarter of the audits would affect Americans earning $25,000 or more per year.
Mace went on to predict that the plan would also increase inflation, incentivize people not to work and make supply chain issues even worse, saying that the damage will be Republicans’ jobs to undo, should they regain the majority in 2022.
“This is a global effort. There’s something called ‘Build Back Better’ going on around the world. This is about social spending, providing social safety nets and paying people,” she said. “One of the reasons why inflation is going to get significantly worse is because of the greater spending we have through ‘Build Back Better,’ through other COVID-19 relief programs.
Spending we’ve done in the past. Taxes are going to go up. That will also affect inflation, I believe, until Republicans are in the majority in 2022.”
