Poll: Dems. unsure who to vote for in 2024, if Pres. Biden doesn’t run

A new poll highlights the massive problem that Democrats are likely to face in 2024: the lack of a viable presidential candidate.

The poll found that a plurality of Democrat voters currently have no idea who they would vote for as their 2024 presidential candidate.

The numbers

The Hill/Harris recently surveyed 939 registered voters between November 18th and 19th. The pollster asked participants who they would vote for as the Democrats’ 2024 presidential nominee should President Joe Biden decide not to pursue a second term.

36 percent, a commanding plurality, answered that they were “unsure” who they would vote for.

The pollster actually provided participants with a list of potential candidates. The list, among others, included Vice President Kamala Harris, former First Lady Michelle Obama, failed presidential candidate Michale Bloomberg, and Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).

Out of these options, the winner was Harris with 13 percent of the vote, which of course is a long way away from the 35 percent that “unsure” received. To help put things into perspective further, 13 percent of participants said that they would vote for someone not listed by the pollster.

Behind “unsure, Harris, and “someone else,” was Obama with 10 percent. But, after that, the remaining candidates all received five percent or less of the vote.

The Dems 2024 problem

The White House has been working to convince America that Biden does intend to run for a second term in 2024. But, serious questions have been about his potential candidacy.

For one thing, Biden, in 2024, will be 81-year-old, and the simple truth is that his current age has already been showing. But, perhaps even more important than this is Biden’s dismal performance, which currently has his approval rating underwater by 11.5 percentage points. Unless things drastically change between now and 2024, Biden is not looking like a strong candidate for reelection.

With Vice President Harris, it’s a similar story, although she likely is even less strong of a 2024 presidential candidate than Biden is. Recent reports indicated that Harris’s approval rating is only at 28 percent, which is a historically bad number. And, let’s not forget that Harris had to drop out of the running in 2020 because she lacked support, and it’s not like she has gained support since becoming Biden’s vice president.

So, the bottom line is that the Democrats are in desperate need of a viable 2024 candidate. And, what makes the situation even worse for the Democrats is that the Republicans already have two strong 2024 presidential candidates in Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and former President Donald Trump.

We are, of course, still a long way off from 2024, and a lot could happen between now and then. But, at least at the moment, Democrats appear to find themselves in a difficult position.
