In pursuit of her second failed presidential bid, 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton was apparently successful in spearheading an effort to undermine her rival with an elaborate disinformation campaign.
Somewhat ironically, new information suggests that despite a narrative attempting to tie 2016 GOP nominee Donald Trump to Russia, it was Clinton and the Democrats who were aided by Russian interference.
Sordid claims based on Steele dossier
A new Washington Examiner report highlights the involvement of multiple Russian figures in the propaganda campaign that went on to cast a shadow over most of Trump’s term in office.
At the heart of the scheme was the notorious dossier by ex-British spy Christopher Steele, which contained various lewd and widely unsubstantiated allegations about Trump.
The Clinton campaign reportedly paid for this document, which helped legitimize FBI surveillance against members of the Trump campaign.
Steele’s primary sources included Russian analyst Igor Danchenko, who was recently charged with lying to the FBI as part of special counsel John Durham’s probe into the origins of the Trump-Russia investigation.
His contacts reportedly included Clinton operative Charles Dolan Jr., who is said to have had an extensive Russian network he used to convey false claims to Danchenko.
“I don’t regret saying that we should investigate”
According to Durham, Danchenko met with Steele in London to “provide him with information that would later appear” in the dossier.
An extensive web of connections also included Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska and a Russian lawyer linked to Fusion GPS, the opposition research firm Clinton used to dig up dirt on her rival.
For its part, the mainstream media declined to issue many blanket retractions and apologies after spending years focused on the widely debunked claims included in the Steele dossier. The Washington Post, however, recently revised about a dozen stories based on the document.
Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), who insisted that Trump colluded with Russia, stands by his position, recently declaring: “I don’t regret saying that we should investigate claims of someone who, frankly, was a well-respected British intelligence officer.”
Now that the damage has been done and Trump is no longer in office, it seems that Schiff and others on the left are now seeking to move past this chapter of history without facing any accountability.
