Even the least popular governor in America is better liked than Biden, new poll shows

Recent wins for the GOP in states including Virginia and New Jersey could represent a troubling sign for Democrats looking to the 2022 midterms. And that’s not all.

According to Fox News, Democrats are also falling flat in the opinion polls, with the latest showing that nine of the 10 most popular governors in the country are Republicans. Worse still for them: Even the nation’s least popular governor — Oregon Democrat Kate Brown — has a higher approval rating than President Joe Biden, a new survey shows.

Republicans win in popularity

For its Saturday report, Fox cited a Morning Consult poll that showed Brown with an approval rating of just 43%. The country’s least popular GOP governor, Arizona’s Doug Ducey, sat at 44%.

But while that may not be good news for Ducey, it’s still 1.1 points higher than where FiveThirtyEight’s polling aggregate has pegged Biden at.

Some polls show Biden with even more dismal numbers. Fox highlighted a Quinnipiac University survey published on Nov. 18 put that Biden’s approval at just 36% — 7 points less than Brown’s.

More bad news for Dems

Of course, it’s not just Biden who’s struggling where Democrats are concerned. In addition to the fact that nine of the nation’s 10 most popular governors are Republicans, the Morning Consult poll also found that six of the 10 least popular governors are Democrats.

What’s more, findings from Quinnipiac University suggest many Americans would like to see Republicans retake Capitol Hill. By a margin of 46% to 38%, “Americans say…they would want to see the Republican Party win control of the House of Representatives, while 16 percent did not offer an opinion,” the pollster stated.

“Americans say 46-40 percent they would want to see the Republican Party win control of the U.S. Senate, while 15 percent did not offer an opinion,” Quinnipiac added.

Looking ahead

Another poll, put out by ABC News/Washington Post earlier this month, gave Republicans a 10-point advantage for the 2022 midterm elections. That margin grew to 18% among independent voters, 50% of whom favored Republicans, while just 32% backed Democrats. Another 18% remained undecided.

Republicans have also made substantial gains among rural and suburban voters. Democrats retain an advantage among urban Americans, though it’s grown more narrow.

According to Fox News, Tim Malloy, a polling analyst for Quinnipiac University, has argued that the data suggests Democrats will face “an ominous double whammy.”

“The Senate and the House will be up for grabs and voters want the GOP to win the jump ball,” Malloy stressed, according to Fox.
