Fox News contributor and civil rights attorney Leo Terrell went after Black Lives Matter activist Hawk Newsome for his threats and refusal to condemn violence over the potential reinstatement of NYPD’s “stop and frisk” policy.
Terrell blasted Newsome for what he called a “very insulting” threat on government and law enforcement during an appearance
one “Fox & Friends Weekend” Sunday.
“Black Lives Matter in New York doesn’t represent Black people. It certainly doesn’t represent me. And for this guy to go on a national TV program and refuse to condemn violence? He’s a shakedown artist,” Terrell said.
“These people live on chaos and fear,” the attorney went on. “If he’s so powerful, run for office. I’m begging Eric Adams right now, implement this anti-gang unit because Newsome has no power, no clout.
“And I find it insulting for an organized group… to threaten the government, that if you don’t do what we want, we’re going to burn you down.
“This is a person who supports riot. It’s offensive. He does not represent Black people.”
These comments were prompted by Newsome’s refusal to condemn violent riots during an interview with Dan Bongion on Saturday after headlines broke about the group’s meeting with New York’s new mayor-elect Eric Adams.
Just days ago the New York Post reported that Newsome vowed there would be “riots,” “fire” and “bloodshed” if Adams followed through on his campaign promise to bring back the plans-clothes police force that is meant to work as an anti-crime group on the streets.
Adams met with BLM New York leaders shortly after he won the New York mayoral race in a meeting where the parties seemed to find much to agree one. However, the Brooklyn Borough Hall, which was live-streamed on Instagram, ended on a less positive note.
“If they think they are going back to the old ways of policing then we’re going to take to the streets again,” New York BLM co-founder Hawk Newsome said outside Borough Hall after the meeting.
“There will be riots. There will be fire, and there will be bloodshed,” he threatened. “We will be at his front door, we will be at Gracie Mansion, we will be in the streets if he allows these police to abuse us,” Newsome said.
Adams, a former NYPD captain, was undeterred, saying in a statement to The Post there is “no reason we cannot have both safe streets and racial justice in our city.”
“If Black lives truly matter, then we must address violence in our communities while we address bias in policing. Yelling and not listening gets us nowhere.”
