The Pentagon has begun taking a renewed interest in what it’s now calling “unidentified aerial phenomena,” more commonly known to the public as “unidentified flying objects,” or UFOs.
But according to one op-ed author, rather than make a good faith attempt at fact-finding, the Biden Defense Department’s efforts are little more than an attack on Congress’ ability to investigate.
Tom Rogan is a national security writer for the Washington Examiner, and in a piece published this week, he expressed skepticism over an announcement from the Defense Department.
The DoD’s press release stated that on Tuesday, Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks directed the establishment of the so-called Airborne Object Identification and Management Synchronization Group (AOIMSG).
NY senator demands answers
The AOIMSG is intended to serve “as the successor to the U.S. Navy’s Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force” and will “synchronize efforts across the Department and the broader U.S. government” with regard to the detection of and research into “objects of interest in Special Use Airspace (SUA),” the press release said.
The Department of Defense added that it “takes reports of incursions — by any airborne object, identified or unidentified — very seriously, and investigates each one.”
However, Rogan insists that the AOIMSG is really “a deliberate and calculated effort to undermine bipartisan legislation moving through Congress,” including “Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s amendment to the 2022 Defense Act.”
Writing for the Examiner, Rogan said that whereas the AOIMSG is only concerned with airborne objects, the bill from Gillibrand, a Democrat senator from New York, also addresses unidentified objects found underwater and in outer space.
What’s more, the legislation would mandate “regular reporting, engagement with foreign allies, and a coordinated effort to research and possibly replicate UFO technologies,” Rogan said, something the AOIMSG will not do.
“Not a small thing”
Rogan concludes his article for the Examiner by saying that lawmakers “should pretend as if Hicks’s announcement never happened. It should pass the Gillibrand amendment and compel real action.
Fox News host Tucker Carlson has extensively covered the issue of UFOs, and in a report this past spring, he noted that a significant number of sightings are made by military personal in restricted areas.
“One Navy pilot said military observed unidentified objects maneuvering in restricted airspace off the coast of Virginia ‘every day’ for two years,” he said, according to Fox. “Flying in restricted airspace is not a small thing. Try that in your Cessna 172 off Virginia Beach sometime. You’ll get very wet, very fast.”
