While President Joe Biden has long been mocked for his history of bizarre and nonsensical comments, Vice President Kamala Harris is no stranger to verbal missteps either.
That was evidenced again last week when Harris praised a college student who had just accused Israel of committing “ethnic genocide.”
According to TheBlaze, Harris agreed with a student who made the ridiculously false accusation during a question-and-answer session at Virginia’s George Mason University.
Harris praised student
One of the students remarked, “I see that over the summer, there have been, like, protests and demonstrations in astronomical numbers standing with Palestine, but then just a few days ago, there were funds allocated to continue backing Israel — which hurts my heart because it’s an ethnic genocide and a displacement of people — the same that happened in America — and I’m sure you’re aware of this.”
Her statement about funding was likely in reference to a bill passed earlier this month that will ensure America’s continued financial support for Israel’s “Iron Dome” missile defense shield, as Fox News reported.
The system is used to intercept rockets fired indiscriminately by terrorist organizations in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with Fox News reporting that Congress’ decision to continuing funding it caused far-left Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) to break down in tears.
Rather than push back on the student’s characterization of Israel as acting as a genocidal regime, Harris instead defended the student’s statement, describing them as her “truth.”
“This is about the fact that your voice, your perspective, your experience, your truth should not be suppressed,” the vice president declared.
Harris’ polls struggle
Harris’ response hasn’t gone over well, with TheBlaze citing a CNN report as saying Harris’ office has since gone into “frantic damage control” mode.
Jonathan Greenblatt, who serves as national director of the Anti-Defamation League, took issue with the student’s remarks as well as the vice president’s failure to address or correct them.
He said that while criticism of Israeli policy is legitimate, it is “deeply problematic when you demonize or delegitimize the country, because we’ve seen how that kind of slander is used, and can spark anti-Semitic incidents here at home.”
Harris’ comments are unlikely to help her anemic poll numbers, with RealClearPolitics’ polling average giving her an aggregate favorability rating of just over 40%.
