Rand Paul points out how HHS is ‘ignoring the science’ on coronavirus

The Department of Health and Human Services is under fire for ignoring “the science” about natural immunity from the coronavirus, according to a report in The Washington Examiner

Chief among their dissenters is Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) who asked HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra during a recent Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee hearing Thursday about the agencies policy.

Paul who is a physician, interrogated Becerra on what qualifications are required before the United States makes a decision in regard to the coronavirus and coronavirus related mandates.

During his examination, Paul referenced a study of 2.5 million patients in Israel which found that the vaccinated group was “seven times” more likely to be infected with the coronavirus than the group that contracted COVID-19 naturally.

The HHS secretary said that he was not familiar with the study Paul cited but that he would “get back” to Paul on the assertion.

“Well, you’d think you might want to be” familiar with the study, Paul responded.

“If you’re going to travel the country insulting the millions of Americans, including NBA star Jonathan Isaac, who have had COVID, recovered, look at a study with 2.5 million people and say, ‘Well, you know what?

“It looks like my immunity is as good as the vaccine or not, and in a free country, maybe I ought to be able to make that decision.'”

Becerra, however, was not inclined to give any ground, even when Paul reminded him of when he called those who choose not to get the vaccine, “flat-earthers.”

“We find that very insulting. It goes against the signs,” Paul said. “Are you a doctor — a medical doctor?”

Becerra skirted around the “yes or no” question by saying, “I’ve worked over 30 years on health policy.”

There was a similar dissidence with answering when Paul asked if the HHS secretary had a science degree of some kind.

“You’ve made these decisions — a lawyer with no scientific background, no medical degree. This is an arrogance coupled with an authoritarianism that is unseemly and un-American,” Paul said. “You, sir, are ignoring the science.”
