Notebook found near Laundrie’s remains ‘may be salvageable,’ police spox says

The manhunt for Brian Laundrie, a person of interest in the homicide of his girlfriend Gabby Petito, ended earlier this month when his remains were discovered in a Florida nature preserve.

Authorities also located some of his personal items nearby, including a notebook one local police officer said could be “salvageable” and might even provide clues about Laundrie’s last days and Petito’s disappearance.

“That is really question for the FBI”

Officials identified Laundrie’s remains via dental records as well as the personal items after the discovery in a previously flooded area of the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park within the larger Carlton Reserve that had been the focus of an intensive month-long manhunt.

He was last seen in mid-September, just days after Petito had been reported missing and days before her body was found in a national park in Wyoming.

According to Fox News, a public information officer with the North Port Police Department offered speculation regarding the potential usefulness of Laundrie’s notebook.

“It appears it may be salvageable,” Josh Taylor said. “That is really a question for the FBI, though.”

For its part, however, the FBI explained that it had “no new information” to share and indicated social media updates would be provided as the investigation continues.

“It appears as if this story is over”

Among the personal items found near Laundrie’s remains was a so-called dry bag, which is designed to prevent its contents from becoming wet. It was unclear from available reports whether the notebook had been found inside of that bag.

Laundrie had been known for drawing and writing in his notebook and occasionally shared its contents on social media. As the U.S. Sun reported, investigators are hopeful some of that information will prove beneficial.

One of his friends expressed some sense of closure now that his remains have been recovered, explaining: “I think this is the outcome we expected. I don’t know if it’s the one we would ask for. But it appears as if this story is over.”

The friend went on to echo the sentiment of investigators by holding out hope that “his notebook can detail what it is we all want to know.”

A family attorney revealed that Laundrie’s remains will be cremated and his loved ones will not hold a funeral.
