Fox News reported this week that former NFL star Patrick Chung has been indicted for attacking a woman outside her Massachusetts home.
Chung, who retired from the New England Patriots in March of this year, appeared in Quincy District Court on Tuesday to face charges of assault and battery against a family or household member.
Chung’s fiancée says that he was struck first
The woman has not been identified and it is not clear what relationship she has with Chung, who was accompanied to court by his fiancée and parents. Prosecutors say that he slapped the woman in the face, pushed her to the ground, and broke her phone.
“Patrick’s behavior has been erratic for a very long time,” alleged victim was quoted as saying. “His behavior was volatile. It was hostile. It seemed premeditated.”
However, Chung’s fiancée insisted that the woman was the aggressor, accusing her of striking Chung as he was attempting to depart from her home.
According to Fox News, the retired athlete was released without bail and is scheduled to make another court appearance on January 7.
Domestic violence is an issue the NFL has struggled with
Allegations of domestic violence have long been a problem within professional football, with Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Richard Sherman being charged in July over an alleged incident involving his in-laws.
The news came six months after the NFL revealed that former Seattle Seahawks offensive lineman Chad Wheeler was charged with three counts of felony domestic violence. Wheeler reportedly demanded that a woman bow to him, and reacted violently when she would not comply.
A police report was quoted as stating that Wheeler put one hand over the woman’s mouth “to stop her from breathing as he continued to strangle her with his other hand.”
Police say the woman had “noticeable fingerprints on both sides of her neck as well as capillaries that had burst at the back of her throat.”
The Seahawks released as statement that announced the team was “saddened by the details emerging against Chad Wheeler and strongly condemn domestic violence.”
“Our thoughts and support are with the victim,” it continued, adding, “Chad is a free agent and no longer with the team.”
