National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIA) head Dr. Anthony Fauci was in the news again recently, this time for comments about children that have some shaking their heads.
According to Breitbart, Fauci made a Wednesday appearance on NPR’s “Morning Edition” during which he insisted that even vaccinated children must wear masks in school.
What’s more, the NIA director said there is no way to know when the masks can come off, explaining, “It’s really going to depend on what the level of dynamics of viral spread is in the community.”
“As you know, right now, even though we’re doing better and the numbers are coming down, we still have a weekly average of a daily 70,000 cases per day,” he continued.
Fauci said that “when you have that type of viral dynamic, even when you have kids vaccinated, you — certainly when you are in an indoor setting, you want to make sure you go the extra step to protect them.”
“So, I can’t give you an exact number of what that would be in the dynamics of virus in the community, but, hopefully, we will get there within a reasonable period of time,” he went on.
“You know, masks are for now, as we say, they’re not forever, and hopefully, we’ll get to a point where we can remove the masks in schools and in other places. But I don’t believe that that time is right now.”
Florida surgeon general says data doesn’t back mask mandates
Those statement come in sharp contrast to recent comments regarding masks made by Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo.
“In Florida, we’re going to stay close to the data,” Fox News quoted Ladapo as telling reporters at a press conference last Wednesday. “And the data do not support any clinical benefit for children in schools with mask mandates.”
“The highest quality data find no evidence of benefit, and we’re going to stick with that because that’s what the data show,” he went on to add.
“Putting a mask, something on the face of your child, that’s a parent’s decision. It’s not a school’s decision. It’s not a school board’s decision.”
In an August article, New York Magazine writer David Zweig pointed to a 2020 CDC study that school masking policies made no significant difference in COVID transmission rates.
