With the Virginia gubernatorial election less than two weeks out, candidate Terry McAuliffe (D) appears to be as desperate as possible, as he recently resorted to promoting a long-debunked myth about an election that took place years ago.
According to Fox News, at a recent event, McAuliffe introduced his guest Stacey Abrams, who famously lost the 2018 gubernatorial election in Georgia, though to this day, she and her supporters insist that she won the election fair and square. Apparently, McAuliffe agrees.
After accusing Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) of “disenfranchising” millions of Georgian voters, the Democratic candidate went on to insist at the event that Abrams was the rightful winner of that election.
“She would be the governor of Georgia today had the governor of Georgia not disenfranchised 1.4 million Georgia voters before the election,” McAuliffe said. “That’s what happened to Stacey Abrams. They took the votes away.”
Spewing lies
As Abrams took the podium at McAuliffe’s event, she made sure those in attendance were reminded of the 2018 Georgia election and how it affected her as a politician.
“I come from a state where I was not entitled to become the governor, but as an American citizen and a citizen of Georgia, I’m going to fight for every person who has the right to vote to be able to cast that vote,” Abrams told the audience.
The message was all too rich for many, as it came from the same types of politicians that continue to ridicule former President Donald Trump and his supporters for claiming that similar circumstances occurred in the 2020 election.
Her claim — and now the same claim of McAuliffe — was repeatedly fact-checked and disproven by even the most left-leaning outlets, including USA Today, and Politifact.
McAuliffe’s in trouble
What should have been a slam dunk for the former Democratic governor has turned into an absolute nightmare for him and his campaign team, as his Republican challenger, Republican gubernatorial nominee Glenn Youngkin, emerged as an underdog to virtually tie McAuliffe in most polls.
Many political insiders fear that President Joe Biden’s declining approval rating will factor into races across the country, including the upcoming 2022 midterm elections. But the Virginia gubernatorial race could be the first proving ground.
According to Fox News, adding to the surprising pressure for McAuliffe’s campaign, the commonwealth of Virginia is seen as a barometer ahead of the midterm elections.
Only time will tell if McAuliffe manages to squeak out a win, but for what it’s worth, he should have easily had this one in the bag already. The fact that he doesn’t speaks volumes.
