Manchin digs in against his own party as Biden’s $3.5 trillion spending plan unravels

Moderate U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) remains entrenched in his opposition to a $3.5 trillion spending proposal being pushed by President Joe Biden and progressives in his own party.

In recent remarks, he called the push for such legislation the “definition of fiscal insanity,” affirming that he would not support the bill.

“How much is enough?”

“At some point, all of us, regardless of party, must ask the simple question — how much is enough?” Manchin asked in a statement on the matter.

Given the fact that the Senate is evenly divided, Manchin’s opposition would effectively unravel the Democratic Party’s plans to pass massive spending bills.

“What I have made clear to the president and Democratic leaders is that spending trillions more on new and expanded government programs, when we can’t even pay for the essential social programs, like Social Security and Medicare, is the definition of fiscal insanity,” Manchin added.

He went on to accuse progressives of ignoring “the everyday reality that America’s families continue to pay an unavoidable inflation tax” that would only be exacerbated by the proposed budget bill.

“That’s dead on arrival if that’s gone”

“Proposing a historic expansion of social programs while ignoring the fact we are not in a recession and that millions of jobs remain open will only feed a dysfunction that could weaken our economic recovery,” the senator said. “This is the shared reality we all now face, and it is this reality that must shape the future decisions that we, as elected leaders, must make.”

Aside from the sheer size of the bill, Manchin has voiced his opposition to any bill that does not include the Hyde Amendment, which prevents taxpayer dollars from funding abortion.

“It has to be,” he said. “That’s dead on arrival if that’s gone.”

One Democratic plan being suggested in the House would create a Medicaid-like program without the Hyde Amendment and essentially include taxpayer-funded abortion as part of the Affordable Care Act.

For Republicans railing against the big-spending Democratic agenda, their most important ally at the moment seems to be the Democratic senator from West Virginia.
