Independents souring on Biden’s leadership, new poll shows

A number of polls released last week show that President Joe Biden’s approval numbers are plummeting among independent voters — the very same voters who helped to get him elected in the 2020 election.

While Biden’s approval among independents was 61% at the start of his administration, according to Gallup polling, it fell to 37%, the lowest level of his presidency, in last week’s poll, The Hill reported.

An Associated Press poll that came out on Friday indicated that Biden’s approval among independents fell from 62% in July to 38% now.

And an ABC/Ipsos poll showed Biden’s handling of the pandemic dropping seven points among independents, with a 9% drop in approval of his handling of infrastructure.

“A lot of consternation”

“Independents are seeing, after an arguably successful six months of his presidency, a significant lack of results and a lot of consternation on Capitol Hill,” Democratic strategist Mike Morey, a former aide to Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY), said of the new polls, according to The Hill.

“They just want things to get done and be well,” he added. “I think if you look at the numbers around Afghanistan, they didn’t see the withdrawal as neat and they don’t see what’s happening on Capitol Hill as neat.”

Biden ran on making Washington more unified, and on a moderate agenda that has not materialized in the months since he took office.

Instead, he has implemented radical policies on the border, botched the pullout from Afghanistan, and now wants to spend another $5 trillion in new money at a time of increasing inflation not seen in 30 years or more.

Voters’ remorse

Understandably, independents who thought Biden would be a moderate replacement for former President Donald Trump’s volatility are wondering what happened. The economy has stalled, tens of millions of people are resistant to getting vaccinated, and we have at least a million more illegal immigrants in the country, where they can take jobs from and spread COVID-19 among U.S. citizens.

It’s never a good idea to vote against someone you dislike rather than for someone whose policies you can support, but too many independents seemed to do just that in 2020. A Zogby poll from early August said 20% have voters’ remorse and regret voting for Biden, according to The Washington Times.

Now we are stuck with Biden, or even worse, Vice President Kamala Harris, until the next presidential election in 2024.

It’s going to be a long three years.
