In 2016, then-President Barack Obama nominated Judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court following Justice Antonin Scalia’s passing. Garland’s nomination was blocked by then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
While that move was denounced by many Democrats who said it was appalling, one pundit says recent events have exposed a dirty secret about Garland: He didn’t belong on the Supreme Court and isn’t fit to be America’s attorney general.
Glenn H. Reynolds, a New York Post columnist, recalled in a Thursday piece how, following President Joe Biden’s election, Garland was picked to head the Justice Department as a “consolation prize.”
DOJ targets parents
Yet, according to Reynolds, the attorney general’s “behavior suggests he’s not qualified for any federal position.” As evidence, the writer pointed to Garland’s appearance on Capitol Hill this week.
Reynolds noted that Garland was questioned about his “inexplicable decision to target federal law-enforcement resources at parents who speak against critical race theory and unpopular transgender policies at school-board meetings.”
He complained that this represented “political thuggery at its worst,” since the alleged school board unrest has “mostly involved people shouting and talking out of turn, with the occasional scuffle.”
The most famous incident involved Scott Smith, a Loudoun County father who was arrested after school board officials defended their transgender bathroom policies by denying that his daughter had been sexually assaulted by a boy wearing a dress. As the Post noted, her attacker has since been convicted.
“But enforcing federal laws wasn’t the point,” Reynolds explained. Rather, the objective was to intimidate those who don’t agree with the left’s agenda.
“Garland’s thuggishness”
In fact, the National School Boards Association (NSBA) has retracted a letter to it sent to Garland likening disruptive parents to domestic terrorists that served as the basis for his federal crackdown.
Yet, despite the NSBA now acknowledging that its talk of threats was overblown, Garland has yet to back down from a memo he wrote warning that parents who oppose critical race theory and COVID-19 restrictions pose a danger, and could face investigation and prosecution.
“Garland’s thuggishness and partisanship here show him to be unfit for the Supreme Court,” Reynolds concluded, adding that they prove he “doesn’t deserve” his current job either.
Hopefully, Garland is eventually replaced with someone slightly less extreme, as America can’t afford another three years of his radical worldview.
