Fox News revealed on Friday that a fully vaccinated Republican member of Congress was hospitalized this week after contracting COVID-19.
“Congressman Thompson on Friday afternoon began experiencing cold-like symptoms and was promptly tested for COVID-19,” a statement issued by Rep. Glenn Thompson’s (R-PA) office read.
“While he is vaccinated, the test came back positive,” the statement declared, adding, “Out of an abundance of caution, he is being treated at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.”
Recovering at home
Fox News noted that the Republican lawmaker was said to be “in good spirits” despite his diagnosis, and added that he would provide additional information later.
Thompson’s office released another statement the following day, in which it explained that the lawmaker had been sent home Friday evening after receiving outpatient treatment.
The latest statement went on to explain that the congressman “has returned to his home in Pennsylvania to recover,” and wishes to thank “the Attending Physician at the U.S. Capitol along with the doctors, nurses and staff at Walter Reed for their concern and care.”
Thompson’s is hardly the first “breakthrough case” in which a member of Congress has tested positive for COVID-19 despite being vaccinated.
Many others
The Hill reported that 48-year-old Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) was found to have the virus on Monday, making him the eleventh vaccinated representative or senator to become infected.
“While I’m currently experiencing mild symptoms, I’m grateful to have the protection of a safe and effective vaccine — and I know without it, this illness could be much, much worse,” Ryan said.
Another incidence involved Rep. Joe Morelle (D-NY), who tested positive two weeks ago. The Democratic congressman tweeted on Sept. 12, “After experiencing mild symptoms, I have tested positive for COVID-19.”
“I have followed all guidance from the Center for Disease Control & my physician and will remain isolated until it is safe to resume official duties,” Morelle continued, adding, “Thankfully, I’m fully vaccinated so my symptoms remain mild.”
In a follow-up tweet, Morelle urged Americans “to get the COVID-19 vaccine to protect themselves — and our community — from the severe impacts this disease can have.”
