During his 4 years in office, former President Donald Trump made deterring aggression by China an important focus of his administration.
His successor doesn’t seem as interested in doing that, however, and the military consequences are already starting to show.
PJ Media has reported that China engaged in its “largest ever incursion” into Taiwan’s Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ) last week.
Incursions by Chinese aircraft into Taiwanese airspace commemorate communist victory in 1949
According to Reuters, the influx came in 2 waves, with the first consisting of 18 J-16 and 4 Su-30 fighter jets along with a pair of nuclear-capable H-6 bombers and an anti-submarine aircraft.
Those military assets were said by the Taiwan’s ministry of defense to have been followed up by 10 J-16s, 2 H-6s and an early warning aircraft.
“China has been wantonly engaged in military aggression, damaging regional peace,” Reuters quoted Taiwan Premier Su Tseng-chang as telling reporters during a briefing on Saturday morning.
Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu spoke up as well, tweeting that Friday “wasn’t a good day” and added that China “doesn’t bother faking excuses anymore.”
Fox News noted that Friday’s incursion wasn’t a one-time event, with more violations of Taiwanese airspace occurring over the weekend and stretching into Monday.
Chinese media warned Taiwan that it would meet the same fate as American allies in Afghanistan
The dates of the incursions appeared to have been picked for their significance, and Friday was the anniversary of China’s communist government coming to power in 1949 while Monday marked the first day of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s new administration.
Fox News reported that 4 aircraft carriers have been dispatched to the region, with 2 coming from the United States, one from Japan, and one from the United Kingdom.
The USS Ronald Reagan and Carl Vinson represented America’s contribution, with the USS Ronald Reagan having been deployed to the Indian Ocean during August’s withdrawal from Afghanistan.
China apparently took note of the embarrassing circumstances under which American forces left the Central Asian country, with Fox News reporting that a Chinese state-run media outlet published an editorial warning Taiwanese citizens that the United States would abandon them just as it abandoned its allies in Afghanistan.
