A body found in Orange County, Florida, appears to be the remains of missing college student Miya Marcano, according to the county’s sheriff on Saturday, the Washington Examiner reports.
“Earlier today, Orange County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team members were searching the area of the Tymber Skan Apartments off South Texas Avenue in Orlando when they discovered a body we believe to be Miya Marcano.
OCSO Dectectives have notified Miya’s parents of this tragic news,” the department said on Facebook. “As a community, we grieve the loss of Miya. The men and women of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends and loved ones,” it added.
A tragic ending
The body was discovered in a forested area near an apartment complex in Orange County. A nearby purse included Marcano’s identification, according to details released at the press conference.
Marcano had been employed at the apartment complex. A suspect in the case also worked at the location as a maintenance worker.
The suspect, 27-year-old Armando Caballero, was also found dead last Monday in what authorities believed to be an act of suicide, according to the press conference.
Marcano had been missing since Sept. 24 after missing a flight to return home. A widespread search was undertaken prior to the discovery of her body near the apartment complex.
Because Caballero worked at the complex, he had key access to apartments, which may have been part of his ability to reach Marcano.
Similar cases
Marcano’s case and reported death are similar in some ways to the well-known case of Gabby Petito, who was found dead in Wyoming last month.
Petito’s boyfriend, Brian Laundrie, is the key suspect and remains missing weeks following her body’s discovery. A massive search for Laundrie is still underway.
I am so heartbroken over how these women died. This is happening far too often and it sickens me. Rest In Peace to these lovely souls. #GabbyPetito #MiyaMarcano #justiceforgabby #Heartbreaking #stopthekilling #respectwomen pic.twitter.com/6ey0Z4If5X

The recent tragedies put a new spotlight on violence against women and domestic abuse.
