Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Frank Clark will face a second gun charge stemming from a June arrest when police observed an Uzi sticking out of Clark’s bag inside his vehicle, Fox News reports.
Clark was originally charged with illegal possession of a firearm, but a count of possession of an assault weapon was added to the list by Los Angeles, California prosecutors this week.
As the Associated Press reported, Clark’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, said the firearm police discovered wasn’t Clark’s, but belonged to his bodyguard. Clark is out on $35,000 bond after the arrest.
The NFL star pleaded not guilty to the initial charge, and he will face a hearing on Jan. 17, a week after the Chiefs’ season is scheduled to end.
NFL to review arrest
Clark’s arrest will be reviewed by the NFL under its personal conduct policy, league spokesman Brian McCarthy told the AP in June.
The football player was also arrested by California Highway Patrol in March for not having a front license plate when police saw a handgun muzzle sticking out of a bag in his car.
He pleaded not guilty to those charges as well. If convicted, according to ESPN he could spend three years in prison, but it remained unclear whether prosecutors intended to seek any jail time for the charges.
In 2014, Clark was removed from the University of Michigan team after a domestic violence incident at an Ohio hotel, the AP reported. He pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in that instance.
“My legal team is taking care of everything,” Clark said in a July interview about the original charges. “I’ve been advised not to speak on it until further notice. My legal team is taking care of everything and I have full confidence in everything they’re doing.”
Clark’s history
Clark played one season in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks before being traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019. He played on the Chiefs’ Super Bowl-winning team in 2019 and has a $100 million contract with the Chiefs.
Going into the current season, Clark had 49 sacks in 91 career games. He has only played one game so far this season due to a lingering hamstring injury.
At 28, Clark potentially has several years of NFL play left — if he can beat the charges or avoid jail time, to say nothing of the potential of experiencing additional injuries.
