Real Republicans have a new cause for celebration.
Breitbart reports that Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), the anti-Trump “Republican,” has just announced his retirement.
What’s going on?
Kinzinger’s retirement announcement comes after the Illinois Democrats put forth their latest redistricting plan. That plan would make it nearly impossible for Kinzinger to get elected.
Some are reporting that Kinzinger would have been placed in the Third District, which is the left-leaning district of Rep. Marie Newman (D-IL). Others, however, are reporting that it would have put Kinzger up against the strong pro-Trump Rep. Darin LaHood (R-IL) in the 16th district.
Either way, Kinzinger, particularly as a result of recent developments in his career, would be highly unlikely to get elected. So, he’s calling it quits – at least for now.
Trump responds
In a response to Kinzinger’s retirement announcement, former President Donald Trump released a short statement saying, “2 down, 8 to go!”
Trump here was referring to the fact that Kinzinger was one of only ten Republicans to vote in favor of impeaching him during the impeachment proceedings that followed the January 6th Capitol riot. Trump has vowed to campaign against each of these individuals in an effort to run them out of Congress.
The second person that Trump was referring to is Rep. Anthony Gonzalez (R-OH), another one of the ten Republicans to vote to impeach Trump. Gonzalez already announced his retirement.
On top of voting to impeach Trump, Kinzinger is also only one of two Republicans who is participating in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) committee that is “investigating” the circumstances of the January 6th riot. The other Republican is Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), who is also facing a difficult reelection as a result of her anti-Trump stance.
Looking forward
The bad news here is that Kinzinger is not quitting politics altogether.
In his announcement, Kinzinger made it clear that “this isn’t the end of my political future, but the beginning.” It’s unclear, though, what that political future entails. Rumors suggest he might pursue the governorship of Illinois.
It also remains unclear as to whether Kinzinger is still a viable political candidate. If not, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him land on some mainstream media outlet. He, certainly, would fit in there.
