Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin, who recently shot and killed the cinemaphotographer and injured the director on the set of the most Rust, has remained mostly silent on the matter as an intense investigation takes place.
However, according to Fox News, the rattled actor finally broke his silence on the horrific situation, telling reporters Saturday in Vermont that Halyna Hutchins, the woman he shot and killed, was his “friend.”
When questioned by reporters about the investigation, Baldwin simply replied, “It’s an active investigation in terms of a woman died, she was my friend.”
The actor and producer added: “We were a very, very well-oiled crew shooting a film together, and then this horrible event happened.”
Baldwin to make changes
In the wake of the tragic shooting, many in Hollywood have suggested the idea of completely scrapping live firearms, and even ones that shoot blanks, as a result of what happened to Hutchins. Baldwin is now one of those pushing such changes, as he revealed to reporters.
“How many bullets have gone off in movies and on TV sets before? How many, billions in the last 75 years? And nearly all of it without incident. So what has to happen now is, we have to realize that when it does go wrong and it’s this horrible, catastrophic thing, some new measures have to take place,” Baldwin said.
The actor added: “Rubber guns, plastic guns, no live — no real armaments on set. That’s not for me to decide. It’s urgent that you understand I’m not an expert in this field, so whatever other people decide is the best way to go in terms of protecting people’s safety on film sets, I’m all in favor of and I will cooperate with that in any way that I can.”
Baldwin went on to insist to reporters that the shooting on the set of Rust was a “one in a trillion event.”
The aftermath
Baldwin, along with his wife Hilaria were spotted having a drink at a bar in a small ski town on Friday evening. The couple was also spotted around the town getting gas and running errands. Hilaria was seen at one point shielding her face, as reporters keen on scooping any new details apparently followed them around.
As of this writing, the incident is still under investigation by the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department, and notably, Sheriff Adan Mendoza has recently referred to the shooting incident as a “criminal investigation.”
Authorities have at least partially shifted focus to the armorer on the movie set who was in charge of providing the firearms for Baldwin and other actors to use.
Some who previously worked with the armorer noted that her safety standards were low, though since then she’s refuted the accusations, NBC News noted.
