President Joe Biden has faced mounting criticism for his administration’s botched U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan — particularly in the wake of a deadly terrorist attack at the airport in Kabul that left more than a dozen American service members dead.
Although Biden took part in a somber ceremony alongside the grieving loved ones of those killed on Thursday, his efforts were not received well by the mother of one fallen Marine.
“You do not have the right”
In a scathing social media post, the woman recalled her meeting with the president, asserting that he appeared disinterested and dismissed her pain.
Shana Chappell, whose son, U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Kareem Nikoui was one of the 13 U.S. service members killed in the attack, tagged Biden in her recent Facebook post. She explained that she approached the president to let him know that she would never be able to hug her son again.
“And then you tried to interrupt me and give me your own sob story and I had to tell you ‘that this isn’t about you so don’t make it about you!!!'” Chappell wrote. “You then said you just wanted me to know that you know how I feel and I let you know that you don’t know how I feel and you do not have the right to tell me you know how I feel!”
The mother went on to accuse Biden of rolling his eyes before abruptly ending their conversation.
“[You] then rolled your f***ing eyes in your head like you were annoyed with me and I let you know that the only reason I was talking to you was out of respect for my son and that was the only reason why,” Chappell wrote, adding: “[Y]ou turned to walk away and I let you know my [son’s] blood was on your hands and you threw your hand up behind you as you walked away from me like you were saying ‘ok whatever!!!'”
Other grieving parents speak out
She similarly blamed Biden for actions she believes led to the deaths of other service members killed in Afghanistan and called him out for his perceived “disrespect” in checking his watch as flag-draped caskets were brought out of a military cargo jet.
Two fathers who lost their sons in the attack were also critical of Biden for apparently checking the time during the ceremony.
Darin Hoover, the father of Marine Staff Sgt. Taylor Hoover, accused the president of checking his watch following a salute after each of the 13 caskets were presented.
Likewise, Mark Schmitz, whose son Marine Lance Cpl. Jared Schmitz died in the explosion, said he could not even look at the president after noticing the “disrespectful” trend.
Although many in the mainstream media attempt to cast Biden as an empathetic leader, it is clear that a number of Gold Star families do not agree.
