According to the Washington Examiner, the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C. has become a favored meeting place for Republican operatives. Yet, if a new report from the paper is accurate, then they might need to begin looking for another meeting spot.
The Examiner cited unnamed sources on Saturday as claiming that former President Donald Trump has entered “advanced negotiations” to sell the leasing rights to the Trump International Hotel.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the “Old Post Office and Clocktower,” construction began on the building in 1892 and concluded in 1899.
Trump’s history
It is currently owned by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), which states that the building’s clocktower portion is the second-highest structure in Washington, with only the Washington Monument being taller.
The New York Times reported in 2014 that the GSA had agreed the previous year to extend a 60-year lease of the Old Post Office and Clocktower to a development consortium lead by DJT Holdings LLC, a company owned by the former president.
Trump proceeded to turn the building into a luxury hotel that opened its doors in September 2016. The Guardian reported at the time that protesters converged on the establishment, with some accusing then-candidate Trump of racism.
What’s more, the Examiner states that many of Trump’s businesses “have sustained heavy losses,” a problem that has “only gotten worse” following his departure from the White House.
A piece published by Axios noted that the sale of his hotel leasing rights would mean “the removal of Trump’s brash, golden branding from Pennsylvania Avenue,” something that is likely to be “savored by opponents.”
Does it mean something?
However, The Guardian also reported on Saturday that attempts to put his financial house in order could be a sign that the former president is planning to make a run for his old job.
“I think he’s gonna run,” Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) reportedly told attendees at a Republican event in Dallas County, Iowa last week.
“I want him to run,” added Jordan, who is known to be a high-profile Trump ally. “He’s proven he can take the heat.”
Meanwhile, Trump adviser Jason Miller said during an interview with Cheddar News that chances of the former president running are “somewhere between 99 and 100 percent.”
