New poll suggests that Dems’ coronavirus mandates could prove politically costly

President Joe Biden and his fellow Democrats may have just run into a serious problem ahead of the 2022 midterms.

The Morning Consult reports that Biden is losing significant support among Black voters as a result of his latest coronavirus vaccine mandate. 

The numbers

For its report, what Morning Consult did was compare Biden’s approval numbers among Black people just before his vaccine mandate to his approval numbers among Black people after his vaccine mandate. The two time frames are September 6th to 8th and September 18th to 20th. Biden announced the vaccine mandate on September 9th.

Between these two time periods, Biden saw a 12 point decrease in his approval rating among Black voters. He experienced a five-point decrease in approval and a seven-point increase in disapproval.

And, Morning Consult further found that, among unvaccinated Black voters, Biden’s approval dropped by 17 percentage points.

Background

Across the country, Black people are the lowest vaccinated race against the coronavirus. Overall, in the United States, only about 53 percent of Black adults have been vaccinated.

New York provides a rather striking example of this. There, an overwhelming 85.6 percent of Black people remain unvaccinated, meaning that they haven’t even received one dose of the coronavirus vaccine.

As for why Black people are not getting vaccinated, reportedly, two of the most common reasons are religious beliefs and distrust of government.

Whatever the case may be, some Black people are beginning to speak out against vaccine mandates, including the one implemented by Biden. One member of Black Lives Matter of Greater New York, for example, recently threatened an “uprising” if leaders don’t pull back on coronavirus restrictions.

Looking forward

The big question, of course, is what does this mean for future elections.

Here’s what the Morning Consult had to say about this:

While Black voters, who helped push Biden over the top against President Donald Trump in key states last year, are unlikely to abandon the Democratic Party en masse to back Republicans on the ballot next year, low turnout from the group could have dire consequences for Democrats in Congress, who already face an early enthusiasm gap.

It is well-known that Black voters are key to the Democrats’ success in elections. Accordingly, the numbers would seem to suggest that the coronavirus mandates imposed by Democratic politicians could prove politically costly. We’ll see.
