The lengthy drama involving entertainer Britney Spears and the conservatorship operated by her father has apparently come to an end.
After 13 years, a judge has suspended the agreement “in the best interests” of the artist.
“One of the most iconic American pop stars”
“The current situation is not tenable,” added Judge Brenda Penny in her ruling, which does not allow for an appeal.
More than 200 of the star’s fans and supporters gathered outside of the courthouse on Wednesday and celebrated the ruling.

Jamie Spears has overseen his daughter’s finances since 2008, though there has been mounting legal and social pressure to bring that conservatorship to an end. Penny’s ruling, therefore, led to widespread praise — including some potentially surprising supporters.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), for example, weighed in to support Spears, calling her “one of the most iconic American pop stars of all time” and declaring that he counted himself “emphatically in the #FreeBritney camp” and has been “vocally, for some time.”
“False, speculative, and unsubstantiated attacks”
Although Spears now appears to have a grasp on her freedom, there are some questions remaining about the next steps in her case. The media scrutiny and public outcry surrounding this case have led to a more open and bipartisan discussion about potential reforms to the important role of conservators.
While Jamie Spears has been generally cast in a negative light throughout the public ordeal, his attorney issued a statement attempting to soften his image.
“Mr. Spears loves his daughter Britney unconditionally,” wrote Vivian L. Thoreen. “For 13 years, he has tried to do what is in her best interests, whether as her conservator or her father.”
The lawyer went on to credit her client with helping his daughter “revive her career and re-establish a relationship with her children” while attempting to assist in addressing her “mental health issues.”
As for his prior silence on the issue, Thoreen claimed that the elder Spears spent that time “biting his tongue and not responding to all the false, speculative, and unsubstantiated attacks on him by certain members of the public, media, or more recently, Britney’s own attorney.”
