Gun control groups demand that Pres. Biden create an “Office of Gun Violence Prevention”

President Joe Biden has been targeted by gun control advocacy groups demanding that he create a White House office of gun violence, Newsmax reports

This comes as David Chipman’s Senate confirmation has stalled. Chipman is the man that Biden nominated to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

The point of the gun violence office, that these gun control activists want Biden to create, would be to bypass the Senate confirmation process, since the office would be headed by a Cabinet-level aide that, as such, would not need to be confirmed by the Senate.

It’s a typical Democratic strategy to get around the established rules and practices. But, the question is will Biden give in to this demand.

Biden is accused of falling “significantly short” of his gun control promises

This story was first reported on by Politico. The outlet managed to obtain the letter that was sent by the gun control activists to Biden. The letter was the joint effort of Guns Down America, March for Our Lives, Newtown Action Alliance, and Survivors Empowered.

The gun control activists begin the letter by calling to mind what Biden has, thus far, accomplished in terms of gun control. But then, the letter writers add that these actions “fall significantly short of the promises you yourself made while running for the presidency.”

The gun control activists go on to accuse Biden of failing to “publicly pressure key senators.” They also accuse him of not advocating “for the repeal of the filibuster.” And, after arguing that gun violence needs to be addressed, the activists ask Biden to do three things.

First, they ask him to “establish an Office of Gun Violence Prevention.” Then, they ask him to “unveil a comprehensive strategy and proactive plan for pursuing your legislative agenda on gun reform.”

And, finally, the activists ask Biden to “use the presidential bully pulpit to talk to Americans about the risks and dangers of firearm ownership within the home and in our communities while also highlighting successful community efforts and legislative reforms that have saved lives across the nation.” Here, apparently, Biden is supposed to disregard all of the unsuccessful legislative reforms.

The activists end the letter with “gun violence can no longer be seen as a back burner issue.” They add, “we are writing to tell you that the time for bold executive action is now — and that you cannot wait on the Senate to take action. Our lives depend on your leadership.”

Is the time really “now”?

Whether or not Biden is going to try to take any of the steps listed by the activists is unclear. The list of demands comes at a particularly bad time for the Biden administration, which is currently dealing with the situation in Afghanistan.

At the moment, many would argue that Biden ought to first worry about taking guns away from the Taliban. Biden, after all, just handed the terrorist group billions in U.S. weaponry. And, with this in mind, until Biden rectifies this situation, any attempt to push domestic gun control is likely going to be an even more difficult sell than usual.
