PJ Media columnist A.J. Kaufman made an interesting point in his Monday opinion column: Whereas President Joe Biden has been reluctant to fight the Taliban, he seems hell-bent on battling Texas Republicans.
Not only does Biden seem to want to fight Texas over its new abortion law that effectively bans abortions after six weeks gestation, but he is also “trafficking in hyperbole” in the process, Kaufman wrote.
“The most pernicious thing about the Texas law, it sort of creates a vigilante system….I know this sounds ridiculous, almost un-American, what we are talking about,” Biden said Friday. “I was told that there are possibilities within the existing law to have the Justice Department look and see whether there are things that can be done.”
On Monday, Attorney General Merrick Garland said the Justice Department will “protect” Texas women seeking abortions. Never mind the fact that the Texas law does not put the women at risk of any consequences from abortion, but goes after providers and those who assist the women.
Biden’s abortion flip-flop
Biden has insisted until the last few years that he believes human life begins at conception, but in a recent speech, he backpedaled on his previous opinion and said he “rejects” it whether scientific or personal.
The president also supported the Hyde Amendment, which prevents taxpayer dollars from being spent to fund abortions, until he suffered massive blowback from progressives during his 2020 presidential campaign. He now desires to repeal that amendment.
Kaufman also cited David French, who in his own column on Saturday pointed out that abortions are continuing to decrease in the U.S., and added that the number has fallen below where they were in 1973 when Roe V. Wade made abortion legal.
French also cited a study that showed most people favor at least some restrictions on abortion, such as a ban on abortions after a fetus is viable. He said that no study participants, even those that favored women’s choices to have abortions, spoke of the procedure as positive.
“Distorting and influential”
“From restrictive to ambivalent to permissive, we instead heard about the desire to prevent, reduce, and eliminate potentially difficult or unexpected circumstances that predicate abortion decisions … Stories from those who have had abortions are likewise harrowing, even when the person telling it retains a commitment to abortion’s availability,” the study’s findings read.
On Fox News Sunday, commentator Jonah Goldberg suggested that Democrats were not as unified for abortion as Republicans are against it.
“I don’t think anybody can really appreciate how distorting and influential Roe v. Wade has been for the last 50 years of American politics,” Goldberg said. “It essentially created the pro-life movement. It became the galvanizing principle of the Republican Party.”
Goldberg cited Hispanic and Black Democrats in particular, many of whom vote Democrat but will not support abortion due to religious reasons.
