Armed business owners in Louisiana spotted defending property against looters

President Joe Biden entered office with a clear desire to implement new gun control restrictions on American citizens, but a recent scene captured in hurricane-ravaged Louisiana has given pro-gun advocates another reason to tout the use of firearms for self-defense.

A startling video emerged of multiple immigrant business owners holding guns while guarding their own properties against would-be looters.

Armed business owners respond

The clip shows individuals dubbed “Rooftop Arabs” in a scene that reminded some viewers of the “Rooftop Koreans” who became heroes of the gun rights movement for defending their businesses from looters during the Rodney King riots nearly three decades ago.

One woman in the clip can be heard advising that a shot was fired.

As for the natural disaster that preceded this display, Hurricane Ida reportedly left at least 15 people dead in Louisiana as many in the state are still living with gas shortages and widespread power outages.

The tragedy was compounded by those seeking to take advantage of vulnerable victims by looting businesses in hard-hit areas.

In New Orleans, police have deployed anti-looting teams responsible for arresting multiple suspects involved in the criminal behavior.

“Say something when you see something”

A police statement asserted that such acts “will NOT be tolerated” and called on “everyone to be good neighbors and say something when you see something.”

Of course, a number of business owners are not content in leaving the security of their property in the hands of law enforcement — especially after a wave of civil unrest in the wake of George Floyd’s death last year led to nationwide calls for defunding police agencies.

Although the chaos of those demonstrations and riots has largely died down, the reticence of some local governments to punish looters and other criminals has not inspired confidence among many law-abiding citizens.

Meanwhile, a troubling spike in violent crime has plagued various cities, leading some Americans to gravitate toward arming themselves even as the Biden administration seeks to make gun ownership more difficult.

Of course, the president enjoys Secret Service protection while prominent politicians calling for defunded police agencies can afford private security. For millions of ordinary citizens, on the other hand, preserving the Second Amendment remains a major priority.
