Arizona Republican AG threatens loss of funds over requested election data

Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich (R) has threatened to withhold up to $700 million if Maricopa County refuses to comply with an election audit subpoena from the state Senate, the Washington Examiner reports

“MCBOS objected to the requested information, and to date, has not provided all of the subpoenaed materials. Moreover, in its response to the AGO, MCBOS failed to explain why it is not required to comply with the legislative subpoena. Its only response was that the Arizona Senate is not currently in session, so MCBOS could not be held in contempt,” Brnovich wrote.

“If MCBOS fails to resolve the violation within 30 days, the AGO, in accordance with state law, will notify the Arizona Treasurer to withhold state revenue from Maricopa County until MCBOS complies,” he added.

The state pays an estimated $700 million to Maricopa County annually, according to the report.

A new strategy unfolds

Brnovich also tweeted his support from a number of attorneys general backing the effort. Twenty-two attorneys general were listed in his most recent tweet thanking them for their support.

“Arizona Senate President Karen Fann and Arizona Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Warren Petersen have pressed the county and Dominion Voting Systems to produce routers, traffic logs, mail-in ballot envelopes, and other information in their investigation. The county has refused,” according to the Examiner.

All political?

Some have argued the efforts are part of a political maneuver by Brnovich or Trump supporters across the state. Brnovich is currently running as a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in Arizona.

The issue, however, transcends politics. The audit has sought to determine whether voter fraud in Maricopa County occurred, and, if so, whether it was significant enough to change the winner of the state’s electoral votes in the 2020 presidential election.

Now-President Joe Biden won Arizona by less than 1%. The razor-thin margin was less than 12,000 votes.

Maricopa County’s leaders now stand in the difficult position of turning over information that may place them in a negative spotlight or face financial disaster. Legal efforts will presumably continue as proponents of the audit push ahead.
