Report: More than 80,000 mail ballots went missing in Wisconsin during the 2020 election

A new report highlights a major negative consequence of the vote-by-mail scheme used during the 2020 presidential election.

That report comes from the Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF), and it shows that, in Wisconsin, more than 80,000 mail ballots that were sent to voters either were undeliverable or went missing. 

The numbers

To really understand the dramatic findings of PILF’s report, we have to consider Wisconsin’s election numbers.

In November 2020, over 1.6 million voted in Wisconsin in the 2020 presidential election. Joe Biden won the contest by a margin of only 20,682 votes, which was about 1 percent of all votes cast. Suffice it to say, it is an extremely narrow margin of victory.

Now, based on PILF’s report, we know that 82,766 mail ballots, that is, ballots that were sent by mail to Wisconsin voters, either “went missing” or were deemed “undeliverable.” That’s over four times Biden’s margin of victory.

It is also significant that 1.4 million ballots, in total, were mailed to Wisconsin voters. Remember, there were only 1.6 million votes cast in total. It was of these 1.4 million ballots that 76,308 were classified as “unknown” and 6,458 were classified as “undeliverable.”

Perspective

To further highlight the problem and its cause, it also helps to look at the corresponding numbers from previous presidential elections.

In 2016, for example, only 158,846 ballots were mailed to Wisconsin voters (as opposed to the 1.4 million mailed in 2020). This was only a small percentage of the 1.4 million votes cast in 2016, only 11 percent as opposed to the 86 percent in 2020.

And, of those 158,846 ballots that were mailed to Wisconsin voters in 2016, only 11,138 were classified as “unknown” and only 1,846 were classified as “undeliverable. Together, these figures equal 12,984 ballots.

And, here’s another important point: this figure – 12,984 – was only 47 percent of Donald Trump’s margin of victory in 2016, which was 27,257 votes. Remember, the 80,000 number from 2020 was 400 percent larger than Biden’s margin of victory.

Conclusions

PILF’s president released a statement, saying:

We now know the cost of the rush to mail balloting – lost ballots. The federal data show the 2020 election had more mail ballots that were never counted than the margin of victory in the Presidential election in Wisconsin. This isn’t the way to run an election. Mail ballots invite error, disenfranchisement of voters, and puts the inept U.S. Post Office determining the outcome of elections.

Yet, this is what Democrats continue to push for.
