Bill Maher, the left-wing comedian and host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, admitted on his show Friday that Greg Gutfeld of Fox News is the “new king of late night,” Breitbart reported, after Gutfeld beat every other late night host in the latest ratings.
“Fox News found a good thing,” Maher reportedly observed of Gutfeld’s eponymous show, which airs at 11 p.m. ET on Fox. “They can make fun of liberals and they are doing it to great success.”
Maher also said he had been asked for many years why there wasn’t any good conservative comedy.
He used to tell people that it was because “the liberals aren’t crazy,” but said “now, I don’t think it’s the same situation.”
“Sounds like an Onion headline”
“I keep saying to the liberals, ‘If what you’re saying sounds like an Onion headline, stop.’ And that’s why — this is why there’s an opening for conservative comedy,” Maher said, according to Breitbart. “Because when you tear down statues of Abraham Lincoln in the Land of Lincoln, ‘Land of Lincoln cancels Lincoln,’ it’s an Onion headline.
“You know, ‘Three-year-olds pick their own gender’ is an Onion headline,” he added. “You know, a lot of this stuff that’s going on the left now, it’s, you know, ‘Seattle votes to decriminalize crime.’”
While Maher acknowledged Gutfeld’s top ratings, he didn’t seem to think the host was all that funny.
“Now, the problem is that they don’t know how to do comedy, but if they found someone who did, they could,” Maher said, as Breitbart reported. “Because comedy goes where the funny is. And there is funny on the left now as well as the right.”
“Predictable,” but not woke
Maher panelist Katty Kay called Gutfeld! predictable, but Maher countered, “I could say the same thing about the other shows. Absolutely.”
When Maher called Gutfeld the “king of late night,” he was referring to an article in Newsweek that noted Gutfeld’s latest ratings, the top of the charts for shows that start during the 11 o’clock hour on the East Coast, enabled him to join other late-night greats like Johnny Carson, David Letterman, and Jay Leno.
It’s possible that Gutfeld isn’t necessarily so great, but that his competition — Jimmy Fallon, Steven Colbert, and Jimmy Kimmel — is just that bad. None of them is really all that funny, and throwing in “woke” politics all the time turns off around half of their potential audience, rendering them unwatchable for many who just can’t relate.
Of the liberal audience watching Gutfeld’s losing competitors, Maher said, “They’re there more to clap for the opinion they already believe in than to laugh. And that’s what changed.” In any case, Newsweek called it a “significant milestone” that a Fox News cable humor show could beat the comics from the main networks, and that it is.
