Biden DOJ to close jail where Epstein died ‘at least temporarily,’ citing chronic problems at facility

The Biden administration has decided to shutter the New York City jail where disgraced financier and pedophile Jeffrey Epstein died two summers ago.

The notorious Manhattan Correctional Center (MCC) will close “at least temporarily” over chronic problems at the facility, the federal Bureau of Prisons said, according to The Epoch Times.

A filthy dungeon

Epstein’s death in August 2019 shined a spotlight on the decrepit jail, which has become known as a filthy dungeon where corruption and incompetence are out of control.

The guards who were assigned to Epstein’s cell block were not keeping a close watch, and were eventually charged with falsifying the prison logs, as the Associated Press reported.

These and other circumstances led to speculation that Epstein, a billionaire who kept his own private island where he preyed on young girls alongside powerful friends, was targeted by a shadowy international cabal, but his death was ruled a suicide by hanging, according to the New York Post.

Epstein was facing sex trafficking charges at the time and his death sparked outrage and calls for reform at the prison, although it appears the facility may be, in the eyes of the feds, irreformable.

“In an effort to address the issues at MCC NY as quickly and efficiently as possible, the Department has decided to close the MCC, at least temporarily, until those issues have been resolved,” the Justice Department said in a statement, according to NBC News.

Prison to close, but mystery remains

While Epstein’s death is the biggest black mark on the prison, problems have continued to surface at the facility, which was locked down over a smuggling scandal in March 2020.

A gun was found with drugs and other contraband, just one controversy that led a Manhattan judge earlier this year to upbraid the “morons” running the prison.

“There is no continuity, there is no leadership, there is no ability to get anything done. They lurch from crisis to crisis, from the gun smuggling to Jeffrey Epstein,” Judge Colleen McMahon said, according to the New York Post.

The MCC now has some 233 inmates, NBC said, and is infamous for housing high-profile criminals like Mexican drug lord “El Chapo” and John Gotti.

Whatever happens to the jail, Epstein’s death remains an inexpungable scandal — and it is doubtful that closing the prison will dispel what remains for many an enduring mystery.
