Police confirm ‘roughly eight individuals’ arrested during climate change protest at home of Sen. Cruz
U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) is no stranger to protests by far-left activists outraged over a variety of his conservative positions.
Most recently, law enforcement sources confirmed that a group of climate change activists was arrested outside of his home in suburban Houston.
“They chose to be arrested”
About 70 individuals reportedly showed up at the location on Monday morning. They were said to be associated with the Sunrise Movement.
Members of the group demand passage of the progressive Green New Deal and call on the Biden administration to stop negotiating with the GOP on the issue. Although the protest was largely peaceful, a few of the participants allegedly ran afoul of the law.
“The large majority of the group are extremely peaceful out there expressing the First Amendment rights [to] protest against climate change,” asserted Houston Assistant Police Chief Ban Tien. “Unfortunately, there was a small group who was actually committing trespassing into private property in front of the senator’s residence.”
He went on to explain that “roughly eight individuals” who refused to disperse were arrested after they refused a final warning to do so.
“We explained to them the fact that they were violating a trespassing law,” Tien said. “They acknowledged they understood and they chose to be arrested.”
“It has to be done in a safe manner”
Taking the protesters into custody was apparently an act of last resort, according to Fox News.
“I just want to take a moment to remind everyone that the Houston Police Department supports First Amendment rights and supports public assembly, but it has to be done in a safe manner,” the assistant police chief declared. “And it has to be done within the confines and within the scope of the laws.”
As of this writing, Cruz has not issued a public statement regarding the incident. It was unclear from available reports whether he was at home at the time of the protest.
For its part, the Sunrise Movement describes itself as “a movement to stop climate change and create millions of good-paying jobs in the process.”
The organization has endorsed a number of far-left Democratic politicians, including the progressive lawmakers in the so-called “Squad” on Capitol Hill.
